| Dear Katy, White House adviser Stephen Miller is the driving force behind many of the Trump administration's most cruel anti-immigrant policies. Miller authored the first Muslim ban and convinced Donald Trump to enact family separation.1 He is not an elected official. He has no background in immigration reform. His expertise lies in the dissemination of racism and xenophobia. We cannot let a person whom the people did not elect and Senate did not confirm destroy the country's immigration system and institutionalize hate.2 Unfortunately, Congress does not have the power to remove Miller, but it can stop his agenda by refusing to fund it. The White House wants a staggering $4.5 billion from Congress to supercharge the border crisis it created. Trump, Miller and their cronies tried to spin this request as a desperate need for humanitarian aid at the border but, we know that there is nothing humane about their cruel policies or hateful agenda. If Congress approves this request, it would give ICE and CBP the power to lock more immigrants behind bars indefinitely, hire more troops and further militarize the border. We cannot allow that to happen. Miller is at the center of all of this. Not only is he designing policies that are causing immense harm to immigrant communities nationwide, it also appears that he is influencing major personnel decisions at DHS. Miller allegedly convinced Trump to pull his ICE director nominee and push out former DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the architect of baby jails. It's clear that Miller and Trump are trying to replace Nielsen and top immigration officials with people even more extreme and cruel.4 Kevin McAleenan, the man who gave CBP agents the greenlight to tear gas refugee families, is now acting head of DHS. Trump's top pick to head USCIS is a former leader of an anti-immigrant hate group.5 Miller is steering this ship and Congress needs to take the wheel now. If it doesn't, immigrants and our democracy will pay the price. Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Democrat who is chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, recently invited Miller to testify after news broke that Trump was planning to hand him – an unelected, unaccountable adviser – control over the country's immigration policies.6 Miller rejected the invitation.
