Dear Katy,

Stand with Rep. Rashida Tlaib: Car insurance costs too much

"What does a credit score say about the person's driving history or their potential for accidents?"

That is the simple question Rep. Rashida Tlaib asked three CEOs of credit reporting companies. Not a single one could answer.1

Yet auto insurance companies charge some Americans more because of low credit scores. Rep. Tlaib needs our help to change that.

Credit scores are an invasive, corporate judgment of your life tinged with bias and racism. They help credit companies rake in billions of dollars without ever once asking our permission to vacuum data about our private lives. Wall Street bankers target low-income communities with predatory loans, while their deliberate redlining keeps Black and Brown communities trapped in struggling neighborhoods and paying sky-high interest rates. The wealthiest 1% hoard most of the wealth while more and more Americans live paycheck to paycheck. There is nothing fair about credit scores in the face of these obstacles.

If Wall Street misses a payment, the Federal Reserve is there with a bailout. If you miss a payment, the credit reporting companies remember it forever – and car insurance companies might use it against you.

Many auto insurance companies use credit scores as an excuse to charge customers more – even if they have an impeccable driving history. Communities that were historically denied access to wealth or jobs end up with lower credit scores and now pay more for car insurance.2

Rep. Tlaib's new bill would put an end to the downward cycle by banning auto insurance companies from using consumer data to set rates – lowering auto insurance rates for some of the people who need it most.3 She's assembled an all-star cast of co-sponsors that includes Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and now she needs our help.
