Dear Katy, Abortion rights and women's freedom have not been at this great a risk since Roe v. Wade was decided. Alabama just banned abortions completely except to save the life of the pregnant woman. Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri also recently passed extreme bans. We need to fight back. Democrat Rep. Judy Chu just reintroduced the Women's Health Protection Act, model legislation that would directly challenge the fringe anti-choice policies Republican state lawmakers are using to undermine women's health and rights.1 Tell the House of Representatives: Stand up for women. Mississippi's six-week abortion ban was just blocked by a federal court, but with Senate Republicans expediting the confirmation of anti-choice judges like Wendy Vitter to the federal bench, legal interventions will be less and less of a reliable firewall.2,3 Just this week, the Supreme Court upheld part of an Indiana law that restricts access to abortion by requiring hospitals to bury or cremate fetal remains, skyrocketing the cost of the procedure.4 With two Trump appointees on the Supreme Court – one a known sexual predator and both anti-choice extremists – women cannot afford to wait any longer for Congress to take action. It's time for Democrats in the House of Representatives to go on the offensive and pass the Women's Health Protection Act. While this bill has no chance of becoming law under this administration, it's important that we build momentum and support for it now. This policy would bar federal and state lawmakers from advancing laws that would:5 - Impose medically unnecessary regulations on health care facilities that offer abortion.
- Restrict women's ability to safely access medication abortion.
- Require women seeking abortion to undergo state-mandated ultrasounds and wait periods.
- Ban abortion.
We cannot sit by while Trump and Republicans institutionalize misogyny and advance laws purposely intended to incite the radical anti-choice wing of their party at the expense of women's rights.
