Dear Katy,

Stop Trump from using the census to discriminate

Donald Trump is trying to make the census into a racist voter suppression tool. This week, Trump's Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross caved to pressure from Trump and Trump's racist Attorney General Jeff Sessions and announced that the 2020 census would have a question about citizenship.1

Asking about citizenship weaponizes the census to perpetuate Trump's war on immigrant communities. Because the inclusion of the question is likely to result in a significant undercounting of those communities, it also gives Trump and Sessions another way to rig elections for Republicans, from the state to the federal level, until 2030.

Congress can block this racist, right-wing plan, but they have to act now. We need to make our voices heard loud and clear and demand a census where everyone counts.

Tell Congress: Stop Trump from using the census to discriminate. Click here to sign the petition.

Sessions asked Ross to include a citizenship question because he said it would help the Department of Justice enforce the Voting Rights Act. Coming from Sessions, a notorious xenophobe with a long history of trying to suppress the vote, such a claim is as laughable as it is appalling. Sessions has repositioned the DOJ so it turns its back on voter suppression and helps promote the myth of voter fraud. Handing him data about citizenship will give him more power to use his office to intimidate voters and attack voting rights in states across the country.

During his campaign, Trump called on his racist supporters to monitor polling places and intimidate Black voters.2 When he took office, he brought together many of the country's worst voting rights offenders to form a voter suppression commission designed to legitimize the voter fraud myth and expand suppression efforts at the national level.3 Now, he is using the census to supercharge his dangerous attempt to undermine our democracy. Congress has to stop him.

Tell Congress: Stop Trump from using the census to discriminate. Click here to sign the petition.

Trump and his cronies have been trying to sabotage the census for months. The Government Accountability Office has already identified the census as a "high risk area" because of underfunding, canceled field tests and the late introduction of new systems and processes.4 The census also lacks competent leadership. Trump nominated Thomas Brunell, who has supported Republican gerrymandering, opposes early voting and has no relevant experience, for the top operational role at the U.S. Census Bureau. Under pressure, he withdrew the nomination, and there is still not a permanent leader for the work.5

The citizenship question is the latest assault. It is likely to suppress participation, resulting in the undercounting of immigrant communities and communities of color. This undercount will mean less federal funding for services in those communities. Just as importantly, states with large immigrant populations are also then at risk of losing seats in state legislatures, Congress and the Electoral College.

In the past few months, 61 members of Congress, civil rights groups and over 160 mayors urged Ross not to include the citizenship question.6 Now that he has taken this dangerous step, the New York and California attorneys general are saying the question is unconstitutional and suing to block it.7 Sens. Hirono, Booker and Menendez introduced the Every Person Counts Act last week. It would prohibit the U.S. Census Bureau from asking a question on citizenship or immigration status.8 House Democrats will introduce a companion bill soon.9

We need to fight this extremist attack on our democracy on every front, including in Congress. The more of us who sign, the greater the pressure on Congress. Click the link below to add your name to demand that Congress stop Trump from using the census to discriminate and suppress the vote:

Don't make us sick to protect Monsanto (signatures needed)

Dear Katy,

Tell Congress: Don't defund cancer research to protect Monsanto

In 2015, the World Health Organization's cancer research program classified the primary ingredient in Monsanto's pesticide Roundup as a probable carcinogen.1

Now Rep. Lamar Smith, the Republican chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, has threatened to cut off the agency's funding in retaliation.2

The World Health Organization's vital cancer research shouldn't be subject to the whims of politicians doing the bidding of corporate campaign contributors. We need an overwhelming backlash to stop this attempt to silence scientific research in its tracks.

Tell Congress: Don't defund vital cancer research to protect Monsanto's profits. Click here to sign the petition.

Since Monsanto introduced its "Roundup Ready" corn and soybeans in 1996, American agriculture has increased its usage of pesticides dramatically – using more than 500 million additional pounds of glyphosate – the primary ingredient in Roundup – and other pesticides.3

Researchers have long studied a suspected link between glyphosate and kidney disease in farmworkers.4 Through its cancer research arm, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the World Health Organization brought together 17 oncology experts from 11 countries to review the available scientific literature. They found that glyphosate is a "probable carcinogen."5

It should come as no surprise that Monsanto rejected their findings. Monsanto uses the same playbook as Big Tobacco and Big Oil – casting doubt on science in order to continue peddling a dangerous product.

Tell Congress: Don't defund vital cancer research to protect Monsanto's profits. Click here to sign the petition.

Just like oil companies, Monsanto has found a willing shill in Rep. Lamar Smith, who has made a career out of undermining science to help out industry. Smith has attacked the National Science Foundation, fought environmental regulations and rejected climate science.6 Now during a sham hearing he called simply to bash science on behalf of Monsanto, he frighteningly suggested that the World Health Organization's funding should be cut.

It is outrageous that Smith is willing to threaten public health to help out his industry friends. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 39 percent of Americans expected to be diagnosed during their lifetimes.7 Undermining research that could help save lives to protect Monsanto's profits is unacceptable.

We need to raise our voices now to stop Smith before his dangerous shilling for Monsanto gains any momentum in Congress.

Meet one of the secret inspirations of the Pussyhat THIS WED

Meet one of the secret inspirations of the Pussyhat THIS WED
If it weren't for Geneen Roth, the Pussyhat would never have happened.

In the springtime of 2016, I read one of her most famous books Women Food and God, (some of you might be familiar with it, it's only a #1 New York Times bestseller and all). Upon finishing it, I promptly totally changed my life, and in November of that year the Pussyhat was born.  I don't think the Pussyhat would have happened had I not greedily consumed Geneen's work earlier in the year.  This is why when I wrote my own self-help book DIY Rules for a WTF WorldI was sure to put her work in the "Suggested Resources" section.

Geneen has written a new book that is fabulous and relatable and inspiring - it's called This Messy Magnificent Life.

If you're in the LA area, - GREAT NEWS! - you can see me interview her about her book live on stage this Wednesday, March 28, at 8:00 PM. Details here.

If you're not in the LA area - DO NOT FEAR! - you can sign up for a free video master class and "meet" Geneen via the interwebs. I believe the class is free with book purchase, you can check out details here

Thanks everyone, I hope you are having a beautiful day.

XOXO

Dear Katy,

Tell the Senate: Block and resist torturer Gina Haspel as CIA director
Donald Trump is assembling a war cabinet.

John Bolton is such an extremist that a Republican-controlled Senate refused to confirm him as ambassador to the United Nations in 2005.1 Trump just made him national security adviser. CIA Director Mike Pompeo wants to destroy the Iran deal and supercharge domestic spying. Trump just nominated him to be secretary of state. Longtime CIA officer Gina Haspel ran a secret "black site" prison in Thailand and later destroyed the videotaped evidence of brutal waterboarding sessions.2 Trump has nominated her to take over as CIA chief.

Trump does not need Senate approval to appoint Bolton, but Haspel must be confirmed. We have a chance to block her nomination and stop Trump's war machine, but we have to make sure every Senate Democrat holds the line and that Republicans of good conscience join them.

Tell the Senate: Block and resist Gina Haspel's confirmation as CIA director. Click here to sign the petition.

Gina Haspel ran a secret prison in Thailand where CIA personnel brutally interrogated detainees with waterboarding, sleep deprivation, confinement in boxes and other torture techniques.3 In 2005, she signed off on an order to destroy videotapes of the torture sessions.4

A 2009 Senate report found that the torture that Haspel and other CIA officials oversaw after Sept. 11 never led to "imminent threat" intelligence that the CIA used to justify the practice.5 Tortured detainees made up information and often gave more useful information without being tortured.6 The report also criticized the CIA for "inadequate and deeply flawed" management of the interrogation program, including improper screening and poor training of interrogators.7

Tell the Senate: Block and resist torturer Gina Haspel as CIA director. Click here to sign the petition.

As of today, Haspel could not legally order CIA personnel to resume torturing suspects. A 2015 law reinforced that these interrogation techniques are illegal.8 But extraordinary rendition, in which prisoners are sent abroad to be held and possibly tortured by foreign governments, remains legal today.9 Just as disturbing, Trump has repeatedly said he wants to bring back waterboarding "and a hell of a lot worse."10 We need government officials who will stand up to Trump's violent impulses and push for legal and effective intelligence gathering.

If the United States is going to live up to its ideals of respecting human rights at home and around the world, we must draw a line somewhere – we cannot reward torturers with top government jobs.

Yet Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said he has not advised Democrats to oppose Haspel.11 Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, who once opposed Haspel for a CIA appointment because of her past role in torture, has now said this of Haspel: "To the best of my knowledge she has been a good deputy director and I look forward to the opportunity to speak with her again."12

The comments from Sens. Schumer and Feinstein make it clear that without massive pressure, the Senate will confirm Haspel in a heartbeat. We need to stand up for human rights and block anyone who tortured detainees from being director of the CIA.

Evil Eye Gloves Already Making an Impact at March for Our Lives - DC!

Evil Eye Gloves Already Making an Impact at March for Our Lives - DC!

This will be super brief because I am in DC and so much is going on!

1) Wherever you are today, even if you don't have the #evileyeglove to wear, please show your support: you can wear the glove or draw an evil eye on your palm, take a picture, and post it to social media with #evileyeglove and #marchforourlives.

That's all. :)

Additionally, know that the #evileyeglove has already started reaching the student survivors and student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the response has been AMAZING.  Students have told me it's amazing to see that people care about them from far and wide.  Not to mention, being from Florida, many were extra excited because they did not think to bring their own gloves!  So your gifts are practically and emotionally appreciated.

Here's an article I just received in USA Today about the evileyeglove phenomenon you've helped create!

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/03/23/heres-why-youll-see-evil-eye-gloves-march-our-lives/453056002/

Sending you so many thanks, so much gratitude, THANK YOU for all that you've done and continue to do.
Love,
