Hope from the frontlines of the movement

Image

Kathleen-

Fossil fuel corporations have known about the climate disasters they'd create for decades.

Lately we've been inundated with images of whole communities destroyed by hurricanes like we've never seen, and it's horrifying.

But empathy and heartbreak become outrage when we turn our attention to those responsible. Fossil fuel corporations like Exxon and Chevron have played a role in creating climate change, and therefore extreme weather, worse.1 They've known for decades that increasing carbon emissions would change our climate and planet in irreversible ways — rising seas, stronger storms, extreme droughts.2 But they undermined climate action anyways, raking in billions in the process.

But I have hope. Because of Greenpeace supporters, we're doing some incredible work to hold fossil fuel corporations and climate-denying politicians accountable.
You can help power this movement — and support all our campaigns for people and the planet — by donating today.

Just yesterday, we joined representatives from hurricane impacted communities in Florida and Texas and climate justice allies to deliver almost 200,000 signatures to Congress with a message. We demanded our elected representatives take action on climate now. It's time they recognize the connection between devastation from massive hurricanes and climate change, stop denying climate change, and commit to renewable energy.

By continuously speaking out and taking action, our movement is growing and we're getting closer than ever to holding these companies accountable. Over the past two decades Greenpeace's groundbreaking research has exposed how corporations like Exxon and Koch Industries created and funded a colossal climate denial operation.3 New York and Massachusetts are now investigating Exxon's climate denial campaign for potential fraud and just last week the cities of San Francisco and Oakland sued fossil fuel companies for climate damages! Whether it's calling out climate-denying politicians, stopping new fossil fuel projects, or winning massive commitments to renewable energy, our movement is growing more dynamic — and powerful — everyday.

This progress — this movement — is only possible because of your generosity. Donate today to all of Greenpeace's important work and watch your contribution make an immediate and generational impact!

There is still so much meaningful work to do. I hope you'll join us.

Sarah Rasmussen
Digital Director, Greenpeace USA

P.S. Greenpeace is committed to taking swift action to document and bear witness to the destruction of climate change-fueled superstorms. We will never stop calling out the corporations and politicians that made these storms worse. Strengthen the movement by donating right now!

Sign if you agree: Fire Trump's FCC chairman

Tell the Senate: Do not confirm Trump's FCC chairman

The petition to the U.S. Senate reads:
"Block and resist the confirmation of former telecom attorney Ajit Pai – an extreme right-wing corporate lawyer – as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission."

Dear Katy,

Unacceptable

Donald Trump would not have risen to power without extreme right-wing media outlets selling him to the public – and the Trump resistance wouldn't be possible without activists fighting back online.

So it is no wonder that Trump's pick for chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is trying to expand right-wing control of the media and simultaneously shut down the open internet.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is an extreme right-wing corporate lawyer who wants to kill net neutrality and approve a television mega-empire that would rival Fox News as a source of right-wing propaganda. But before Pai can start his second term, the Senate must re-confirm him for the job, which gives us a crucial opportunity to fight back and resist Pai's anti-internet, anti-consumer agenda.

Tell the Senate: Fire Ajit Pai. Click here to sign the petition.

Net neutrality is the rule that prevents internet providers like Comcast and AT&T from charging you more to access content they don't like, or even censoring it altogether. Even though net neutrality is wildly popular, Pai wants to repeal net neutrality rules and hand control of the internet to the biggest corporations.1

Without net neutrality, internet providers could make it harder for activists to organize online if they don't like their views. They could create "slow lanes" and "fast lanes" for different content, making it hard for anyone except the biggest companies to reach internet users. If Pai succeeds in reversing net neutrality, the open internet as we know it could disappear.

Tell the Senate: Fire Ajit Pai. Click here to sign the petition.

Meanwhile, Pai is opening the door for the largest broadcasting company in the United States to get even bigger. The right-wing television conglomerate Sinclair wants to buy out its competitor Tribune Media. The new mega-corporation would reach 72 percent of of American households – far more than the legal cap that limits broadcasters to reaching no more than 39 percent of homes.2 But Pai is reviving an outdated loophole in the rules to let the merger go through.3

Sinclair is famous for sending stations daily "must-run" segments that push its extremist right-wing views. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Sinclair required local television stations to air stories critical of Hillary Clinton.4 Jared Kushner even announced that the Trump campaign had "struck a deal" with Sinclair to ensure more favorable coverage of Trump.5 Now, Sinclair has hired former Trump aide Boris Epshteyn and requires stations to air his commentary nine times a week.6

If Pai is successful, his radical pro-corporate agenda could reshape our media landscape and eliminate the open internet. But because his position as FCC chair is appointed and not elected, the only way we can stop him is to demand that our elected U.S. senators block his confirmation.

My climate-denying senator sent me hurricane tips

Greenpeace

Kathleen -

Fossil fuel corporations can't hide from the facts anymore.

Take Action!

Hold fossil fuels corporations and climate deniers accountable. Give now to support all of Greenpeace's work!

Take action

I live in Gainesville, Florida, and as my family and I stared down the path of Hurricane Irma, the news coverage was unavoidable. Shocked newscasters and politicians kept throwing around the word "unprecedented," as though September's extreme weather events came out of nowhere. But, the truth is, Greenpeace has been warning the fossil fuel industry — and those they helped elect with their massive donations — about the disastrous effects of their actions for years.

As the eye of the hurricane arrived, lying in bed, listening to the wind get louder and louder, all I could think about is that we are doing this to our planet and its climate. I'm not even going to experience the worst of it, but my daughter will. Our changing climate, the issue work on everyday, transformed into a panic beating in my chest.

It's time for each of us to give whatever we can to hold fossil fuel corporations — and the politicians who depend on their deep pockets — accountable for what they're doing. Donate today to support all of Greenpeace's work to protect communities and the environment.

With Hurricane Irma, we didn't just experience extreme weather due to climate change. We felt the impact of our dependence on fossil fuels. Evacuees ran out of gas. Few evacuation options even existed because Governor Scott turned away federal dollars for high-speed rail. My city almost lost our water supply due to fuel scarcity.

There are powerful people working hard to block the clean energy revolution at every turn. In Florida, Governor Rick Scott and Senator Marco Rubio are fighting progress on sustainable energy alternatives while taking enormous sums of money from oil and gas corporations and utilities. Senator Rubio, a climate denier, actually had the audacity to email Floridians a list of post-hurricane tips.

If we want to stop runaway climate change and prevent future superstorms, we have to hold these people accountable.

Please donate what you can to support all of Greenpeace's campaigns today.

My overnight panic during Hurricane Irma just underscores something I've known for a long time, one of the things that brought me to Greenpeace in the first place — we've got to find our way out of this mess. I really believe that we will, together.

Sincerely,

Nicole Sands
Digital Platforms Manager, Greenpeace USA

P.S. Banning the words "climate change" won't stop climate change. Climate change doesn't care if you believe in it. I will work tirelessly to fight climate change for my daughter, for all of our children. Will you join me by giving generously today to support all of our work for a green and peaceful future?

Sign the petition: Trump wants to militarize Colorado police

Stop the militarization of local police

Tell Congress:

"Pass the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act and block Donald Trump's attempt to militarize local police."

Add your name:

Sign the petition ►

Dear Katy,

Stop the militarization of local police

Donald Trump recently rewarded the country's biggest police union for their endorsement of his dangerous, racist candidacy. He is going to give state and local police military-grade weapons of war.1

The Defense Department's 1033 program transfers surplus military equipment to police. It has given billions of dollars' worth of tanks, grenade launchers and other weapons to local law enforcement agencies – including more than 93,000 machine guns.2

In 2014, police in combat gear driving mine-resistant tanks violently confronted people protesting the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The national outrage and organizing, including from more than 100,000 CREDO members, helped force President Obama to dramatically scale back the 1033 program.

Recently, police in St. Louis in full riot gear were chanting "whose streets, our streets" as they violently confronted people protesting yet another not guilty verdict for another police killing of a Black man.3 But Trump, whose racist, xenophobic agenda depends on demonizing communities of color and unleashing law enforcement, wants to bring 1033 back in full force.

Fortunately, there is a bill that would stop Trump's dangerous escalation and help keep weapons of war out of our communities, the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act. The more of us who speak out, the more pressure on Congress to act.

Tell Congress: Pass the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act and block Donald Trump's attempt to militarize local police. Click here to sign the petition.

Police militarization contributes to the over-policing of communities of color and the erosion of trust between communities and police. When police departments are armed with military-grade weapons and trained to use military tactics, they are more likely to treat the people they are meant to serve as enemy combatants.4 In many communities, fully militarized SWAT teams routinely issue search warrants, terrorizing people in their homes and neighborhoods.5

Police militarization also undermines people's right to peacefully and safely protest. The hyper-militarized and clearly disproportionate police response to largely peaceful protesters in Ferguson is far from the only example. In the summer of 2016, Baton Rouge, Louisiana police responded to peaceful protests of Alton Sterling's murder as if they were going to war.6 Last fall in North Dakota, police in riot gear confronted peaceful Standing Rock protesters with armored vehicles, automatic rifles, sonic weapons, concussion grenades, pepper spray and beanbag bullets.7 Surveillance devices like the Stingray, which can secretly download cell data and disrupt cell service, are also part of the 1033 program.8

It is no surprise that Trump, who condoned white supremacist Nazi violence against peaceful protesters last month in Charlottesville, wants to further weaponize police, terrorize communities of color and stifle peaceful dissent to his hateful regime. That is why it is more important than ever to pass the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act now. The bill would shut down the direct pipeline between the Defense Department and police, ban the transfer of a long list of military equipment, require extensive documentation and reporting, and prohibit the militarization of departments under investigation for civil rights violations.9

Donald Trump's extreme agenda has already emboldened law enforcement agents across the country, at the local, state and federal level. Making sure that his administration cannot arm police with weapons of war is a powerful way to fight back. Can you add your name today?

Signature needed: No public land giveaways

Tell Congress: No public land giveaways.

The petition to the U.S. House reads:
"Oppose H.R. 2423, which would threaten Utah's Red Cliffs Conservation Area, and any other legislation that would allow development, mining, drilling or fracking in conservation areas, national parks or other public lands."

Dear Katy,

Donald Trump's campaign to hand over national parks, monuments and other public lands to developers and the fossil fuel industry could get another boost very soon.

The right-wing founder of the congressional anti-parks caucus, Utah Rep. Chris Stewart, has introduced dangerous legislation that would allow development of utilities and roads directly through the pristine Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, which would threaten the endangered Mojave Desert tortoise and literally pave the way for a future of unmitigated development and drilling in this protected region.

Rep. Stewart is moving quickly to pass this bill or quietly sneak it into a larger legislative package with little notice. We must act now to shine a light on this legislation and demand that Congress reject this attempt to seize federal land and threaten endangered species.

Tell Congress: Don't give away Utah's Red Cliffs Conservation Area. Click here to sign the petition.

A long-time climate denier and former CEO of an energy sector firm, Rep. Stewart has spent his political career working to hand over federal lands to the oil and gas industry.1 During his 2012 run for Congress, he was called "Glenn Beck on steroids" and received significant funding from the Koch brothers and ExxonMobil while campaigning on the promise to allow drilling for fossil fuels on public lands, claiming "de-federalizing public lands is vital to a coherent energy strategy."2,3,4

In Congress, Stewart has been staunchly anti-government and anti-public lands, supporting legislation to block the creation of national monuments and sponsoring bills that chip away control of federal lands — in order to give more access to the fossil fuel industry. In 2014, Stewart even seemed to sympathize with anti-government rancher Cliven Bundy after his extremist militia pointed loaded rifles at federal government employees.5

If Congress passes his bill, the endangered desert tortoise will be under major threat, but Rep. Stewart doesn't seem to care much for endangered species, either. Since he was first elected, Rep. Stewart has waged a vocal campaign against endangered species, praised the de-listing of the grey wolf, introduced legislation to prevent the listing of the sage grouse, and even sponsored a bill to that would undermine the Endangered Species Act altogether.6

It's abundantly clear that Rep. Stewart's legislation is another attempt to strip away federal control of public lands and hand it over to the fossil fuel industry for unfettered development. We can't let that happen.

Tell Congress: Don't give away Utah's Red Cliffs Conservation Area. Click the link below to sign the petition:
