Sign the petition: Support single-payer health care

CREDO action
It is time for Democrats to fight back. We need Medicare for All.

The petition to congressional Democrats reads:
"It is time for Democrats to go on the offensive and take bold, decisive steps toward a health care system that puts people over profits. The majority of the country supports single-payer health care. Join Sens. Sanders, Merkley and Warren and Rep. Conyers to support legislation that would make Medicare available to all Americans."

Dear Katy,

Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have delayed their Trumpcare push thanks to the massive grassroots pressure that you helped build.1 Now is the time for Democrats to go on the offensive with a real solution to our health care crisis that provides universal health care for all.

The last few months have made it more than clear that right-wing Republican extremists are going to be relentless in their attempts to steal health care from millions of people in order to give tax breaks to millionaires. Every version of their cruel and immoral Trumpcare bill threw women, low-income children, families and seniors under the bus.2 Republicans are already revising their deadly bill, and there is no doubt that they will try to ram it through again.

To fight back, Democrats cannot just resist Trumpcare. They must unite behind a bold and clear alternative like Medicare for All, also known as "single-payer" health care. Early this year, Rep. John Conyers introduced a Medicare for All bill in the House. And recently, progressive champions Sens. Bernie Sanders, Jeff Merkley and Elizabeth Warren called on Democrats to push for a national single-payer health care system.3,4 Now, we must show just how many Americans support this simple and commonsense alternative. Help us build momentum now so Democrats know exactly what we expect them to do.

Tell Democrats: It is time to fight back. We need Medicare for All. Click here to sign the petition

Massive grassroots support for Medicare for All would shine an even harsher light on Republicans and their cruel, heartless bill. Unfortunately, Democrats are divided when it comes to a national single-payer system. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer have so far dodged discussions about making Medicare available to all Americans. Recently, Leader Pelosi encouraged supporters of single-payer to focus on state options instead.5 In contrast, while McConnell was trying to ram Trumpcare through the Senate, Sen. Warren was out barnstorming in her home state urging Democrats to embrace single-payer.6 Progressives know that we could solve today's health care crisis by expanding a program that is already up and running – and working.

It is important to be clear: The problems with health care in America are not because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). American health care costs so much and heals so little in part because predatory insurance companies and Big Pharma stand between people and their doctors and use monopoly power to rob us blind. The ACA made modest but still life-changing reforms that we should defend against Republican attacks. Millions of people have already been helped – people with pre-existing conditions, young adults who get to stay on their parents' plan, beneficiaries of the Medicaid expansion and those who would have faced lifetime caps on coverage.

Now we need to expand the ACA's reforms. Medicare for All would leave the medical system in place, but replace the for-profit insurance companies that drive up costs without making us any healthier. So it's no wonder that most Americans – including 41 percent of Republicans – support Medicare for All.7 We need to put pressure on Democrats to be bold and put Republicans on the record opposing a single-payer health care plan with broad support.

Tell Democrats: It is time to fight back. We need Medicare for All. Click here to sign the petition

Medicare already covers 40 million Americans over the age of 65, providing quality care at prices that are much lower than the private market. If we start by lowering the Medicare eligibility age, it will provide competition to bloated predatory insurance companies and bring us closer to the day when people are covered from birth.

Medicare and Medicaid are our nation's most effective and efficient health care programs, but right-wing Republicans have long had their sights set on dismantling our social safety net. Their ultimate goal has been to end Medicare as we know it and cause skyrocketing premiums and loss of coverage for nearly 57 million of us. We cannot fight back with half-hearted, corporate solutions. We need to show the millions of Americans who love Medicare that progressives have an alternative vision to make it available to all.

If we want want to make health care for all a reality for the entire country, we must make sure Democrats take decisive steps toward a national health care system that puts people over profits. Now is the time for Democrats to put the full weight of their caucus behind Medicare for All.

Keep these extraordinary monuments safe

Take action

Our national monuments are in danger from Trump and his fossil fuel cronies, and it's going to take everything we've got to keep these extraordinary sites safe.

We must RESIST Trump's plans and protect our country's national monuments! Make a public comment to the Department of the Interior before July 10.

Right now, 27 national monuments from the Giant Sequoia National Monument in California to the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument in New Mexico are being reviewed by the Trump administration all could lose their national protections.

The monuments under review are breathtaking places that exhibit the country's rich cultural history and extraordinary landscape. There's a reason these areas of the U.S. have been placed under protection. The thought that they could be rolled back or revoked is devastating — to public lands and waters, Indigenous peoples, and local communities. Protections of these national monuments must remain untouched.

Submit a public comment to protect our country's national treasures today!

Communities across the country are standing up to protect their beloved national monuments
— from the Indigenous nations defending cultural sites to tourist towns that would be devastated by a fossil fuel disaster. And hundreds of thousands of people like you have already taken action to join them by showing up to rallies and keeping the pressure on your elected officials… but this is going to be a long, hard fight. Are you in?

Please make a public comment today to protect our national treasures before the comment period ends July 10.

Today's call: Tell Sen. Gardner to stop Trumpcare

CREDO action
Call Sen. Gardner: Stop Trumpcare

We have the momentum. Now we need to keep the pressure on. This week, Mitch McConnell postponed the Trumpcare vote until after the Senate's July 4 recess because he did not have enough Republican support to pass it. Now we need to overwhelm key Republican senators with massive opposition to McConnell's deadly bill. Your senator, Cory Gardner is a potential swing vote. Will you call him today?

Click below for a sample script and the number to call:

Take action now ►

Dear Katy,

Stop Trumpcare

We just got a key win in our fight to stop Trumpcare. Yesterday, after facing weeks of intense pressure from grassroots activists – including hundreds of thousands of CREDO members and our friends in the progressive movement – Mitch McConnell caved. He postponed the vote on the bill until after the Senate's July 4 recess.

McConnell abandoned his promised vote because he did not have enough Republican support to pass his cruel, dangerous and deadly bill. And he did not have enough support because of CREDO members like you. Together, we made over 48,000 calls to key senators demanding that they stand up for health care and say no to Trumpcare.

Our activism worked, and the momentum in the fight over health care is on our side, but we cannot afford to stop now. McConnell will be tenacious in trying to cut craven and cynical backroom deals with the members of his caucus over the recess to find a way to steal health care from 22 million people. There is no deal that could remake this horrible bill into one that will serve the people of Colorado. Sen. Gardner should hear loud and clear that his constituents expect him to reject any version of Trumpcare that McConnell puts forward for a vote.

Tell Sen. Gardner: Stop Trumpcare. Click here for a script and the number to call.

Senate Republican leaders can only afford to lose two Republican votes. They know that the greater the public outrage, the harder it will be to hold their caucus together. Now is the time to keep reminding key Republican senators who they work for. If we can get Sen. Gardner and at least two of his colleagues to do their jobs and protect the health and well-being of their constituents, we can a maintain our firewall against a Trumpcare bill that would:

  • Destroy Medicare by stealing from its trust to fund huge tax breaks for the wealthy, paving the way to its privatization.2
  • Cut millions of Medicaid dollars, phase out the program's expansion and allow states to impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients, an attack that could force millions of low-income people to go without necessary care.3
  • Defund Planned Parenthood, which would threaten the reproductive freedom of the 2.5 million people who rely on Planned Parenthood for health care every year.4
  • Prohibit people from using credits or other Trumpcare funds to purchase insurance plans that cover abortion.5
  • Give states the power to remove emergency room visits, mental health care and maternity care from the list of essential benefits that insurance providers are required to cover.6
  • Increase health care premiums for seniors by as much as 850 percent.7

We are deeply grateful and appreciative of the power of the resistance which has been fueled by CREDO members and our progressive allies and we know that Sen. Gardner is feeling the pressure. But we cannot get complacent and underestimate congressional Republicans' commitment to their party's extremist agenda.

Just months ago, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan faced a similar situation to McConnell's. He pulled the House vote on Trumpcare not only because of massive progressive pushback, but because conservative extremists did not think the bill was cruel enough. Ryan worked to strong-arm moderates into agreeing to an even more extreme version of the bill and jammed it through the House. There's no reason to assume that McConnell won't try the same tactics in the Senate. We have to keep massive public pressure on Sen. Gardner to say no to Trumpcare once and for all.

Fight Trumpcare and oppose health care repeal (submit a comment)

CREDO action
Submit a public comment: Fight Trumpcare and oppose repealing the Affordable Care Act

Submit a public comment to the Department of Health and Human Services:
"The Affordable Care Act has saved countless lives and improved the lives of millions – removing lifetime caps, expanding access to Medicaid, lowering costs, protecting people with pre-existing conditions and making sure millions of people get health care. Trumpcare and Republican plans for 'repeal' would actually steal health care from at least 22 million in order to give a huge tax cut to millionaires. That is immoral and unfair."

Take action now ►

Dear Katy,

The Trump administration just asked the public what it thinks about repealing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.1 We need to surprise them by sending in a flood of messages supporting it and opposing repeal.

The request for information was posted to ask for comments on Trump's executive order attempting to delay and sabotage the Affordable Care Act. But it is a golden opportunity to pour in messages supporting Medicare, Medicaid and lifesaving health care reforms. Already, people have started submitting messages opposing Trumpcare.

The timing could not be more urgent – this public comment period coincides with Senate Republicans' secretive efforts to end Medicaid and steal health care from millions in order to give a tax break to millionaires.2 Every comment helps make it clear that opposition to Trumpcare is simply overwhelming and emerging everywhere possible.

Submit a public comment: Fight Trumpcare and oppose repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Trumpcare is cruel, reckless, dangerous and unpopular. It will take health insurance away from at least 22 million people, destroy Medicaid, defund Planned Parenthood, increase health care premiums for seniors, force low-income people to go without necessary care, cost people their employer-provided coverage, deny people treatment for six months if their coverage lapses and punish people with pre-existing conditions3

On his first day in office, Trump issued an executive order to delay and sabotage the Affordable Care Act while Republicans cooked up their plan to give millionaires a $1 trillion tax cut paid for by taking health care away from millions.4

Now, the Department of Health and Human Services has requested information and public comment on one aspect of that executive order.5 Perhaps they expect industry lobbyists to share comments about what a great job they are doing, but they gave us another chance to speak out. We need to use this opening to defend health care and defeat Trumpcare.

Submit a public comment: Fight Trumpcare and oppose repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Congressional Republicans are obstructionist, hyper-partisan extremists committed to jamming Trumpcare through in the dead of night. We need to use every chance we can find to fight back.

Comments have started pouring in opposing Trumpcare. We need to keep hammering this message home.

Submit a public comment: Fight Trumpcare and oppose repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Thank you for speaking out,

Murshed Zaheed, Political Director

FWD: Protect our national treasures!

Greenpeace

Kathleen -

Each of our country's national monuments hold something important and unique — from the ancient historical and sacred sites at Bears Ears to the hidden coral gardens of the Atlantic's Northeast Canyons and Seamounts.

But the Trump administration looks at these beautiful and culturally-significant places and only has eyes for the oil, coal, and gas buried beneath them. The administration is reviewing nearly thirty monuments with the goal of removing some of their protections and allowing fossil fuel companies to exploit these lands and waters.

Make a public comment to the Department of the Interior and speak out to keep national monuments protected! Comments close on July 10.

Sincerely,

Rachael Prokop
Climate Campaigner, Greenpeace USA

P.S. We CANNOT allow these national treasures to be damaged and destroyed, while fossil fuel executives line their pockets and facilitate the burning of more climate-change-causing fuels. Please make your public comment before July 10 to keep our country's national monuments protected!

Kathleen-

Stop Trump from giving our country's national monuments to the fossil fuel industry!

Protect national monuments today!

Send a public comment by July 10 to speak out!

Take action

Trump and his fossil fuel cronies are after our country's national monuments. Last week, Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke formally recommended shrinking Utah's Bears Ears National Monument, against the wishes of Indigenous tribes and thousands of others who are standing up to keep Bears Ears' cultural sites and ecological wonders protected.

And Bears Ears is only the beginning. Nearly 30 other national monuments are also being reviewed by the Trump administration with the goal of opening up these lands and waters to fossil fuel extraction.

But communities across the country are standing up to protect their beloved national monuments — from the Indigenous nations defending cultural sites to tourism-dependent towns that would be devastated by a fossil fuel disaster. And hundreds of thousands of people like you have already taken action to join them.

We must RESIST Trump's plans and protect our country's national monuments! Make a public comment to the Department of the Interior before comments close on July 10.

I have spent time in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, one of the monuments under threat, and my visit left a lasting impact on me. Words cannot describe the beauty in the red rock sculpted by the myriad creeks that run through the land or the smell of sage that permeates throughout the gulches as the sun coming over the cliffs warms up the morning air.

Grand Staircase-Escalante was set aside to be protected for its unique and beautiful landscape and its important place in Indigenous history. After witnessing its beauty for myself, I'm horrified by the thought of potentially opening it — and any of our country's other national monuments — up to the highest bidder for fossil fuel development.

Once they're lost, they're gone forever. Submit a public comment to protect our country's national monuments today!

Past presidents chose to protect these places for their cultural and ecological importance — and now Trump could take all that away.

We CANNOT allow Trump and his fossil fuel cronies to destroy these priceless sites. The Department of the Interior is collecting public comments until July 10, and we need your voice!

We must stand with communities, protect  our climate, and keep Trump from carving up our national treasures. Make a public comment today!

For communities and climate,

Mary Sweeters
Climate Campaigner, Greenpeace USA

P.S. The Department of the Interior is accepting public comments on the national monument review until July 10! Please make a public comment today to protect our national treasures.

Will we see you Sunday?

Greenpeace

Kathleen-

The kickoff webcast for the Summer of Resistance is right around the corner and I can hardly wait!

This Sunday, thousands of Greenpeace supporters and activists across the country will join for a virtual training on creative, non-violent resistance techniques that you can use to protect your community from the Trump agenda.

I'd love for you to join us. Make sure to RSVP today, and I'll see you on the LIVE webcast this Sunday!

No matter what issue you care about most — climate change, clean air and water, racial justice, women's rights, immigration, you name it — there's never been a more pivotal moment to get involved. It's up to people like you and me to stop the Trump administration from erasing the progress we've spent years fighting for.

This moment in our history requires us to be bold, creative, and ambitious — and that's what the Summer of Resistance is all about!

For the resistance,

Ryan Schleeter,
Summer of Resistance, Greenpeace USA

P.S. In case you didn't see it, I included Rachel's first invite below. I'm looking forward to seeing you online this Sunday, 1pm PDT / 4pm EDT as we launch the Summer of Resistance!

Kathleen-

Ten cities. One hundred people-powered actions. Thousands of activists like you. The Summer of Resistance starts NOW!

Join the Summer of Resistance kickoff webcast!

Join the Summer of Resistance kickoff webcast and learn how thousands of people will be stepping up to protect our climate and communities this summer.

RSVP

You never forget the feeling of taking part in non-violent direct action.

For me, it's a combination of anticipation and adrenaline. It's the empowerment and the love that come from taking big risks for something I know to be right — like peacefully blocking an oil rig from setting sail to drill in the Arctic — that compel me to put my body on the line.

Bold acts like these bring our communities together. They remind us of our shared responsibility to one another. And they continue to prove how much power we the people truly hold if we're willing to use it.

This is what gives me hope that the resistance movement can defeat Trump's attacks on our climate and democracy.

We need courageous, creative acts of peaceful resistance more than ever if we're going to stand up to Trump's dangerous agenda. Kathleen, I want to help you be the one to take that action. Join us as we launch the Summer of Resistance with a huge creative resistance training webcast on Sunday June 25. RSVP today!

The Summer of Resistance is one of the most ambitious projects I've ever seen Greenpeace take on. We're training thousands of people in non-violent direct action and inspiring more than 100 acts of creative resistance across the country to fight for a green, peaceful, and just future.

At a time when the Trump administration is working on all fronts to advance its hateful agenda, the Greenpeace community is coming together to learn the skills of creative communication, peaceful protest, and non-violent direct action necessary to step up our resistance.

AND we're putting those skills to work in our communities in big way.

It all starts on Sunday June 25 at 1pm PDT / 4pm EDT. Can I count on you to join us? RSVP today to power a wave of creative action to protect our climate and communities from Trump's agenda.

Just two weeks ago, many of us were angered and saddened by Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement, setting back global climate progress and leaving the world's most vulnerable communities to pay the price.

These kinds of assaults on our climate and our human rights are unacceptable — and that's what the Summer of Resistance is all about. If Trump and his administration of climate-deniers and racists think they can push through their agenda against the will of the American people, it is up to us to show them they are wrong. We will RESIST!

We've got an ambitious plan to do just that, and your involvement is critical. Join us on Sunday June 25 to kick off the Summer of Resistance and take YOUR resistance to the next level.

Talk to you soon,

Rachel Rye Butler
Summer of Resistance, Greenpeace USA

P.S. Resisting is more fun (and effective) with friends! Greenpeace volunteers across the country have stepped up to host webcast viewing parties where you can meet fellow activists and plan for what resistance will look like in YOUR community. Find a gathering near you or sign up to host your own today!
