The Arctic is under attack

Image

Kathleen-

Trump wants to transform one of America's most extraordinary wildernesses — the home of Porcupine caribou, polar bears, and tundra swans — into a stomping ground for 90,000-pound "thumper trucks," drilling machines, and leaky pipelines that would not only worsen climate change but threaten the human rights of the Gwich'in people.

You've already joined hundreds of thousands of others challenging seismic testing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — a potential hazard to endangered wildlife that could also destabilize the frozen tundra itself.

Now, I need you to take the next step and demand the federal government listens to citizens and science: the Arctic Refuge must be protected!

We have until March 13, 2019 to submit public comments to the Interior Department to protect the Arctic Refuge and the climate!

SAExploration hoped to start seismic exploration in the Arctic Refuge this past December, but the government shutdown delayed the federal review process, which closed the seasonal window for exploration. But SAExploration hopes to win federal approval this spring to permit seismic testing when winter comes around again. SAExploration needs the heavier snow and frozen ground of winter to deploy its 90,000-pound trucks that shake the ground — this is the monstrous invasion of the Arctic Refuge that Trump's trying to greenlight.1

We're here to make sure it never happens.

People power is already stopping fossil fuel projects. Together, our resistance against the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline extension forced Kinder Morgan to abandon the project and the project is now stalled. The pipeline extension would have cut across Indigenous lands and threatened the survival of the few remaining Southern Resident orcas. Together, we can win again!

Seismic surveying and drilling would threaten the sacred places and life-ways of the Gwich'in people, and the iconic and diverse wildlife like caribou, snowy owls, and polar bears. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge could scar the landscape and release more climate-wrecking carbon emissions.

Submit a public comment today to stop dirty energy exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!

Each unique public comment must be read and the Interior Dept. must properly consider public opinion before it makes this decision. This is one of many battles against the Trump administration's anti-climate agenda and it's vitally important that we let Trump know that we're watching and ready to protect the climate at every turn.

Our resistance against the Trans Mountain pipeline — non-violent direct action and tens of thousands of people united in solidarity with the Indigenous-led movement — showed that determined public action can defeat even the most stubborn of oil barons. We can do this again and save the Arctic Refuge! But only with your support.

Submit a public comment now and show Trump that the resistance is here to protect the Arctic Refuge!

For the Arctic,

Janet Redman
Climate Campaign Director, Greenpeace USA

P.S. Trump's trying to permit drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a decision that could devastate the region's people and wildlife. But we can stop him! Submit a public comment today to the Interior Department telling them to protect the Arctic Refuge!

Dear Katy,

Tell Congress: Pass Medicare for All

Yesterday, Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduced new Medicare for All legislation with more than 100 cosponsors. The bill's introduction comes on the heels of a new poll showing that up to 71 percent of Americans support Medicare for All.1

But Washington consultants are warning Democrats to stay away from Medicare for All, according to one worrisome new report.2

It is up to us to build support for Rep. Jayapal's new bill and pressure Congress to pass Medicare for All into law. Can you help?

Tell Congress: Pass Medicare for All now. Click here to sign the petition.

Washington consultants want Democrats to focus on defending the Affordable Care Act from Republican sabotage and push other changes "down the road."3 Meanwhile, there are a raft of "Medicare for More" proposals from Democrats that would introduce Medicare as a public option, and some are better than others.4 What is important right now is to build support in Congress for the strongest possible Medicare for All legislation – from Progressive Caucus co-chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal – to remind Democrats where the progressive base of the party stands.

Medicare and Medicaid are our nation's most effective and efficient health care programs, but right-wing Republicans have long had their sights set on dismantling our social safety net. Now, Trump is helping them do it. Their ultimate goal has been to end Medicare as we know it and cause skyrocketing premiums and loss of coverage for nearly 57 million of us. We cannot fight back with half-hearted, corporate solutions.

Predatory insurance companies and Big Pharma stand between people and their doctors and use monopoly power to rob us blind. Medicare for All would replace the for-profit leeches that drive up costs without making us any healthier. Even one recent right-wing study found that Medicare for All would result in more health care coverage and better outcomes while reducing overall U.S. medical costs.5 Medicare for All would also improve the program for today's seniors by including younger people and adding dental and hearing coverage into Medicare.

Medicare for All has become the mainstream, common-sense position. But with many conservative Democrats resisting and other Democrats floating limited proposals, we need to strengthen progressives' bargaining hand by pushing all members of Congress to support the boldest possible Medicare for All legislation.

Trump just handed a massive giveaway to predatory lenders that trap people in debt. It is up to us to resist his gift to payday lenders and expose his scam artist populism.

Stop scam artist Donald Trump from rewarding predatory lenders

Submit a public comment to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau:
"Preserve and protect strong rules on payday lenders, including standards for ensuring recipients can repay loans. Anything less is a giveaway to an exploitative industry that preys on hard-working Americans."

Dear Katy,

Stop scam artist Donald Trump from rewarding predatory lenders

Donald Trump spent most of last month's State of the Union address lying about his record. That's no surprise. He's been lying about his plans for years. In fact, that's how he stayed in business: making grandiose promises to get people to believe in him before they realize it's a scam or outright fraud.1

One of the textbook examples is Trump University, his sham educational center that a judge forced to pay students $25 million in damages for making fraudulent promises.2 In Washington, just look at the Trump Tax Scam – Trump claimed to drain the swamp, but he then drained working people's pocket books and gave massive handouts to the rich.

Nowhere in the State of the Union did this fraud populist admit to the American people that he just handed a massive giveaway to predatory lenders that trap people in debt.3 Now, it is up to us to resist his gift to payday lenders and expose Trump's false populism.

Stop scam artist Donald Trump from rewarding predatory lenders. Click here to submit a public comment.

The dirty secret of the payday lending industry is that there is no money in people repaying their loans on time. The key to the whole profit-making engine, the one that makes lenders' Wall Street backers rich, is tricking people into taking out a loan and then locking them into months or years of debt. Charging hidden fees and demanding sky-high interest rates, payday lenders are little more than legal loan sharks.

Now Trump wants to make it easier for payday lenders to exploit people. His handpicked leaders of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – first now-acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and then Kathy Kraninger – have set out to destroy the watchdog Sen. Elizabeth Warren initially proposed.4

Kraninger just announced the CFPB would rescind the most important part of an Obama-era rule on payday lenders: the part that would force lenders to confirm if someone has the ability to repay a loan, instead of deliberately trapping them deeper in debt to make money off the interest.5

Once again, Trump is siding with powerful Wall Street financial interests and pushing a change that will disproportionately hurt low-income Americans and people of color. We have fewer than 90 days to flood the CFPB with comments opposing the giveaway to predatory lenders and exposing the latest Trump scam, so we need your help.

Sign now: Trump's chief of staff may have lied to the Senate

Tell Congress: Investigate acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney

Petition to the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform, Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and Senate Committee on the Budget:
"Investigate acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney for potentially misleading the Senate during his confirmation process, failing to pay debts his company lawfully owed and violating the Hatch Act."

Dear Katy,

Tell Congress: Investigate Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney

Donald Trump devoted a portion of his State of the Union to claiming that investigating his corruption would somehow harm the economy and followed it up with angry tweets calling constitutional oversight "presidential harassment."1

Trump and his corrupt cronies need more investigation, not less.

News recently broke that Mick Mulvaney, Trump's acting chief of staff, may have lied to the Senate in 2017 when it was considering his confirmation as head of the Office of Management and Budget. The potential perjury was about a dodgy land deal in which his company tried to avoid paying its legal debts.2 The case is tied up in court – but there must be a separate, impartial investigation into Mick Mulvaney's potential wrongdoing.

Tell Congress: Investigate acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney. Click here to sign the petition.

The Mueller investigation into Trump's Russia ties is just the start of the corruption. There is evidence that Trump and his family are profiting from holding office. Companies are spending money at his hotels to influence him. He and his family have lied to investors, and multiple members of Trump's administration broke the law. That is before you consider the ongoing investigations from the New York Attorney General and U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the New York Times' revelation that Donald Trump and his father dodged taxes for decades.3

It appears we can add Mick Mulvaney to Trump's list of overwhelming corruption. The non-partisan watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has called for an investigation into one of Mulvaney's complex real estate deals. Mulvaney's company took out major loans and invested heavily in a piece of land. When the market went sour and he had to sell rather than develop the land, Mulvaney created a new company and figured out a way for that company to get all the proceeds. In the process, he dodged paying back one of the original lenders.4

All of this violates the ethics standards of someone in such a prominent position, but it gets worse. Mulvaney told the Senate that the deal was over and done even though the lender sued him in court – in other words, it appears that he lied.5

Tell Congress: Investigate acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney. Click here to sign the petition.

On top it all, CREW believe Mulvaney violated the Hatch Act by using government resources to benefit the Trump reelection campaign. That is no surprise – after all, Mulvaney once publicly told a group of bankers that as a congressman he only took meetings with people who donated to his campaigns.

Mulvaney appears to be just another corrupt, lying Trump official even though he is in one of the most powerful positions – chief of staff – in the country. We cannot let him escape investigation.

20 seconds, stop oil drilling

Image

Kathleen-

Trump wants an oil & gas lobbyist to look after all public lands and waters!

It's been two weeks since the Green New Deal resolution officially dropped and I've never heard so many people talking about the climate crisis with such ambitious, people-centered plans.

I'm thankful because we need to completely transform how fossil fuel extraction decisions are made. But, as you can imagine, Trump and the oil and gas industry aren't going to come along with us.

As we speak, the administration is moving to confirm David Bernhardt to lead the Interior Department — a veteran fossil fuel lobbyist who wants to open protected public lands and waters to drilling and brings new meaning to the conservative tagline "drill, baby, drill".

Sign here to tell the Senate to block Bernhardt's Secretary of the Interior approaching confirmation and protect public lands and waters from oil and gas drilling.

Let me tell you about David Bernhardt... He has pushed hard to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. His former firm has actually sued the Interior Department four times before on behalf of a client around water regulation. And, as Deputy Secretary of the Interior, he played an active role in the Trump administration's work to open public lands to fossil fuel and mining interests.

Bernhardt has made a career out of being a glorified errand boy for the oil and gas industry.

The good news is the Senate still has to vote to confirm Bernhardt as the official Secretary of the Interior. And, we've teamed up with Daily Kos, Climate Hawks Vote, and CREDO Action — along with millions of people like you to throw a wrench in Trump's plans.

But, you need to act now.

Add you name to stop Bernhardt's confirmation as Secretary of the Interior by telling your Senator to vote "no" now.

Since January, there's been tremendous opposition to Trump's agenda to allow oil and gas companies to do whatever they want. Because of your help, SAExploration won't be seismic blasting in the Arctic Refuge this season — an important milestone to protecting the area from oil drilling.

The fight to stop all new fossil fuel expansion needs to continue with you right now to get to the green future we want.

Every voice counts in the effort to stop Bernhardt and outweigh fossil fuel industry dollars, especially now.

Sign the petition to stop David Bernhardt's confirmation as Secretary of the Interior.

Here's to stopping fossil fuel lobbyists from running our country,

Vicky Wyatt
Climate Campaigner, Greenpeace USA

P.S. From offshore drilling to the plundering of Bears Ears to attacks on the Endangered Species Act, there are basically no Interior Department issues that don't raise questions about Bernhardt's ability to act objectively. It's time that Congress provided actual checks and balances so that lobbyists like David Bernhardt don't get away with turning our country into a giant oil field. Sign the petition to the Senate now.
