Sen. Gardner's vote to advance the Trump Tax Scam (calls needed)

Stop the Trump Tax Scam: Call Sen. Gardner

Sen. Gardner just voted to give corporations and the ultra-wealthy a huge tax give-away, but the Trump Tax Scam is not law yet. With enough pressure Sen. Gardner can still stop Trump's plan to slash the corporate tax rate while raising taxes on seniors and working families. Can you make a call today?

Dear Katy,

Stop Trump's Tax Scam
Cruel and craven Republicans – including Sen. Cory Gardner – just voted to advance the Trump Tax Scam.

This fight is still far from over. Even though every single Republican in the Senate voted to move this huge corporate give-away forward, we can still stop the Trump Tax Scam.1

Sen. Gardner's constituents know that he just voted to advance a bill that will hurt middle- and lower-income families while giving Trump and his wealthiest friends a huge tax handout.2,3,4 We need to show him what overwhelming opposition looks like.

As we showed when we stopped Trumpcare, our collective action makes a difference. Now we must ramp up the pressure on Sen. Gardner to stop this dumpster fire of a bill in its tracks.

Call Sen. Gardner: No tax handouts for the wealthy and big corporations. Click here to get started with your calls.

Republicans are desperate to deliver a win to their corporate donors, and the Trump Tax Scam is a massive handout to corporations and the wealthiest Americans. They are trying to pull the wool over their constituents' eyes with the false promise of tax cuts for working Americans, but in reality, the Trump Tax Scam would be devastating.5

The Trump Tax Scam would:

  • Repeal the deduction for state and local taxes, used by the majority of middle class taxpayers, and strain budgets for local services 6
  • Allow massive amounts of wealth to accumulate untaxed by raising the cap and then eliminating the estate tax – a tax paid only by the ultra-wealthy.7
  • Slash the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to just 20 percent – less than what most workers would pay.8
  • Allow tax dodgers to get away with refusing to pay their fair share by eliminating the alternative minimum tax, which has been a safeguard against the ultra-wealthy like Donald Trump paying virtually nothing in taxes.9
  • Sneakily undermine health care by repealing the individual mandate.10
  • Increase the burden of health care costs by eliminating the deduction for out-of-pocket medical expenses.11
  • Strike an intentional blow to abortion rights and lay the groundwork for banning abortion outright by enshrining the language "unborn child" into the federal tax code.12
  • Make higher education even more unaffordable by eliminating the deduction for student loan interest and ending exemptions for graduate students paid for research work or teaching while in school.13
  • Reduce incentives for consumers to purchase clean energy vehicles.14
  • Jeopardize the fragile natural environment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by opening it up to drilling in order to pay for corporate tax handouts.15

Republicans need to know that going along with Trump's greedy and cruel tax plan will be devastating for everyone but the 1%. CREDO activists made more than 10,000 calls to key House Republicans, and two of them voted the right way.16 We need just three Republicans to stand up to Trump in the Senate – and Sen. Gardner could be the deciding vote. Will you call now to tell him we are watching and that it is unacceptable for them to do anything less than fully resist Trump's tax scam?

Investigate the FCC's sweetheart deals for Trump TV

Tell the FCC inspector general: Investigate FCC Chairman Pai's Sweetheart Deal for Trump TV

The petition to the inspector general of the Federal Communications Commission reads:
"Investigate FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's actions to benefit the Sinclair Broadcast Group. Until the investigation is complete, direct staff to cease work on the merger and direct Chairman Pai to recuse himself until the investigation determines whether a permanent recusal is warranted."

Dear Katy,

Tell the FCC Inspector General: Investigate FCC Chairman Pai's Sweetheart Deal for Trump TV

It's no secret that Donald Trump hates the media, but he's not just complaining about it on Twitter. Just as Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai has been trying to kill net neutrality, Pai has also been quietly changing FCC policies to create a more pro-Trump media landscape.

Almost from the day he took office, Pai has pushed through a series of radical rule changes to help out the Sinclair Broadcast Group, a network so cozy with Trump that it is sometimes called "Trump TV." Among other sweetheart deals, Pai is scrapping FCC rules on media ownership to allow Sinclair – already the biggest television operator in the country – to acquire another network and grow even bigger.

If they succeed, Trump and Pai could permanently change the U.S. media landscape. But their actions appear to be so clearly designed to benefit one company – and Trump himself – that they could violate the FCC's own mission as an independent agency.

Tell the FCC inspector general: Investigate FCC Chairman Pai's actions to benefit the Sinclair Broadcast Group. Click here to sign the petition.

Last year, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner announced that the Trump campaign made a deal with Sinclair to get favorable coverage for Trump on the far-right network.1 Paying back the favor, once Trump entered the White House, he met with Sinclair's CEO and talked about "potential FCC rule changes" to help the company.2

But Pai's actions are just as disturbing. The FCC is supposed to be an independent agency that serves the public interest – not media companies and certainly not Donald Trump. Days after Trump won the election, then-FCC Commissioner Pai had an off-the-record meeting with SInclair's CEO. In the two-week period before Trump took office, Pai met with Sinclair two more times, once before meeting with Trump himself and once after.3 Then, two days after taking office, Trump nominated Pai as FCC chairman. Pai got to work right away on a series of policy changes that directly benefit Sinclair.

Tell the FCC inspector general: Investigate FCC Chairman Pai's actions to benefit the Sinclair Broadcast Group. Click here to sign the petition.

Pai's most radical step has been to eliminate rules that would prevent Sinclair from acquiring the Tribune Media Company. This is a mega-merger that would leave Sinclair with an incredible 223 stations covering 72 percent of U.S. households.4 With the FCC's longstanding media ownership rules out of the way, the commission will decide on the merger in the next few months.

Now, however, 15 senators have called for the FCC inspector general to investigate Pai's actions, saying they "suggest a disturbing pattern of a three-way quid pro quo involving Sinclair, the Trump administration and Chairman Ajit Pai."5 The senators have asked the inspector general to tell Pai to recuse himself from all decisions related to Sinclair during the investigation, and they want FCC staff to stop work on the merger until the investigation is complete.

If Pai is changing the media landscape to benefit Donald Trump, we need to know – and we need to stop him.

Sen. Gardner can stop Trump’s tax plan

Dear Katy,

Stop Trump's Tax Scam

Yesterday, cruel and craven Republicans in the House voted in favor of a huge giveaway to corporations and the wealthiest Americans.

Now the fight turns to the Senate, where the bill would sneakily repeal part of the Affordable Care Act.1 Senate Republicans may vote on this Trump-Tax-Scam-turned-Trumpcare bill as early as this week.2 The Trump Tax Scam would make deep cuts to the social safety net and raise taxes on middle- and lower-income families – all while giving Trump and his wealthy friends trillions in handouts.3,4

As we showed when we stopped Trumpcare, our collective action makes a difference, and now that the Trump Tax Scam is Trumpcare all over again, we must ramp up the pressure on Sen. Gardner to stop this dumpster fire of a bill in its tracks.

It’s Giving Tuesday, and …

Donate Now.

They will match every dollar you give today

As you know, Kathleen, a group of donors have offered to match all Giving Tuesday gifts made to Greenpeace before midnight tonight, up to a total of $83,000. If you give $50, it could become $100. If you give $250, it could become $500.

Your gift on this Giving Tuesday could help us reach our $83,000 goal. And when we do, the $83,000 becomes $166,000!

  • That $166,000 will be used to push the CEOs of Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, and McDonald's to stop producing single-use plastic packaging that often ends up in our oceans.

    • And did you know, Kathleen, that the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic enters the ocean every minute, every day, all year long. Corporations sell us products in plastic packaging that are meant to be used for minutes, but they last a lifetime or longer. If current trends continue, scientists estimate that by the year 2050 there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish!

  • It will be used to prevent Congress from handing over our lands and waters to oil companies for them to drill and spill on, with fewer protections for communities and wildlife.

  • It will be used to hold polluters like ExxonMobil accountable by exposing the colossal climate denial scheme to deliberately deceive the public — even though it knew the science and dangers of climate change for decades.

  • It will be used to spur action on climate change, and put our country back on the path toward solving the problem instead of making it worse.

Your Giving Tuesday gift will help us achieve all these goals and more. But it can only qualify for the match if we receive it before midnight tonight.

Thank you for giving to the oceans, the creatures that live in them, the people who rely on them, and to support all we do to protect the environment at Greenpeace.

Sincerely,

Kate Melges
Plastics Campaigner, Greenpeace USA

P.S. So don't miss out, join us today in the peaceful defense of our oceans and all of the life that depends on them! Donate Now.
