Eye-opening

Kathleen-

I'm writing to you from Miami, having just spent the better part of a month traveling down the Eastern Seaboard onboard the Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise. This experience has been amazing, humbling — and eye-opening.

Everywhere we've gone, we've met people who are ready and excited to take action and make a difference in their communities. We visited a marine protected area and saw how conservation efforts have helped bring fish species back from the brink of overfishing and near-depletion. But we also spent days trawling the waters for plastic debris — and not a day went by that we didn't find plastic pollution in the Atlantic. And we know the Trump administration wants to open up new areas off our coasts for drilling — which would be disastrous for communities and wildlife.

I am so inspired by everything we've seen and done this fall as we traveled from New York to Miami — but there's so much more to do. Please make a gift now to support our work for our coasts and our communities — and all the work we do to protect people and the planet.

One of the most exciting developments of this tour was when researchers were able to use the Arctic Sunrise to recover acoustic monitoring equipment from the sea floor off the coast of North Carolina. They will be able to collect data from these instruments to measure the behavior of whales in Atlantic waters. This information will be vital for understanding the potential damage of seismic blasting, which can harass and even harm marine life and is the first step towards oil drilling.

Information like this is so vital to protecting our oceans and animals like whales that live there. We can't rely on the Trump administration — so I'm really proud we were able to use the Arctic Sunrise to support this kind of research.

No matter what the Trump administration does, Greenpeace will continue to fight for our oceans — through investigations, research, and organizing. Please support all of our work today!

Now, a delegation of climate justice organizers will join the crew of the Arctic Sunrise and set sail for Puerto Rico in support of Climate Justice Alliance's Our Power Puerto Rico campaign. This delegation will begin the distribution of supplies that will arrive in Puerto Rico later this month on a separate vessel. The Our Power Puerto Rico campaign are still collecting critical items like solar panels and water purifiers that will be distributed in rural communities across the island by our local partners, Organizacion Boricua.

President Trump's response to the dire situation in Puerto Rico is irresponsible and unconscionable. More than 60% of the island is still without power, including the city of San Juan. The lack of response to Puerto Rico's plight is the continuation of long-term institutionalized racist policies, and we knew we had to use our unique ability to reach the island by water to work in solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico as they organize a just recovery model that serves as a counter to corporate-driven disaster capitalism.

Your gift to Greenpeace will help us continue to fight for sustainable, just communities everywhere!

Thank you for joining us in the fight for our oceans and our communities.

Sincerely,

Kate Melges
Campaigner, Greenpeace USA
