Kathleen, it doesn’t get any closer than this

We want to say thank you and share some of the astounding activism you were part of in 2018. Take a second to glance at the email below and watch our year in review now.

Katy,

Donald Trump spent 2018 trying to make America meaner, poorer, more bigoted and more unequal.

CREDO members pushed back on his hateful agenda at every turn. We did not always win, but we never stopped struggling for the just, inclusive and welcoming country we all deserve.

We want to say thank you – and celebrate the astounding activism you were part of in 2018. Click here to watch our year-in-review video and read more about what you made possible.

CREDO is unapologetically progressive, unafraid to be bold, committed to putting communities threatened by Trump first – and powered by CREDO members just like you. In 2018, we were a force for good based on three key principles:

  • Protect the people most at risk from the racist, xenophobic, anti-woman and anti-LGBTQ Trump Republican agenda.
  • Resist right-wing efforts to drag our country backward and the Trump regime's undermining of our democracy.
  • Counter Republican extremism with a bold progressive vision - dreaming big in the face of opposition from Republicans and corporate Democrats.

That is exactly what you did in 2018 – generating more than 27 million petition signatures and making more than 100,000 phone calls to members of Congress and other decision makers.

Click here to learn more about what CREDO and you accomplished in 2018.

2018 was a long, hard year. Our communities and our democracy were under attack. But we stood up, we stood together and we stood strong.

As we look back, we celebrate the hard work we've done as a community. And as we look forward, we're so grateful that we'll be in the struggle together next year and beyond.

Thank you for everything you did this year,

Heidi, Josh, Jordan, Kaili, Brandy, Mark, Carrie, Mark and the CREDO Action team

Sign the petition: Stand up for immigrant children

Tell Alex Azar and Kirstjen Nielsen: Let the children go. Stop sharing sponsor data with ICE.

The petition to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen reads:
"Stop helping Immigration and Customs Enforcement target and detain immigrants who apply to sponsor children in detention. End data sharing between the Office of Refugee Resettlement and ICE."

Dear Katy,

Tell Alex Azar and Kirstjen Nielsen: Let the children go. Stop sharing sponsor data with ICE.

Some believe that the greatness of a nation is determined by how it treats its children. By this measure, the United States is failing.

There are still more than 14,000 immigrant children in DHS custody, and instead of placing them with willing sponsors, the Office of Refugee Resettlement is making sure many of them stay behind bars. Over the summer, HHS Secretary Alex Azar and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen enacted a data-sharing agreement that weaponized ORR.1

ORR now shares the biometric and background check data of any person who applies to sponsor a child with ICE, preventing many family members from stepping forward for fear of being hunted down and detained by Trump's deportation force. Sens. Gillibrand, Hirono, Booker, Merkley, Feinstein and Blumenthal are calling on Azar and Nielsen to end this cruel policy. Add your name now to help turn up the pressure.

Tell Alex Azar and Kirstjen Nielsen: Let the children go. Stop sharing sponsor data with ICE. Click here to sign the petition.

At the height of the family separation crisis over the summer, Azar enacted an ORR policy that forced potential immigrant sponsors and everyone in their household to go through an extreme vetting process and then shared the data it collected with ICE. As a result, ORR is now an extension of Trump's deportation force. Thousands of refugee children locked up in inhumane detention facilities are serving longer sentences because many people are too afraid to sponsor them.

The average stay in detention for unaccompanied minors increased from 40 days in 2016 to 59 days in 2018.2 The total number of children DHS and ORR are detaining at once is at an all-time high.3

The effects of detention on children are devastating. The trauma of being ripped from family members and forced to live in overcrowded camps and prisons can have debilitating lifelong effects on a child's health and well-being.

HHS says its focus is the health, safety and best interest of the child. Yet, the nation watched in horror as thousands of children suffered in isolation and inhumane conditions in the tent camps of Tornillo, Texas, without adequate access to legal services. ORR recently announced a minor change to its vetting policy, eliminating the requirement that household members of sponsors be fully vetted before a child is reunited with a parent or loved one.4 That is not enough. As long as ICE remains at the center of ORR's reunification process, children will be in harm's way.

Add your name now to help us and our friends at the National Immigrant Justice Center shine a bright light on the dangerous collaboration between ORR and ICE, and demand that Azar and Nielsen end it now.

Sign the petition: Pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

Tell Congress: Pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

Petition to Congress:
"Pass the Federal Domestic Workers Bill of Rights immediately in the new Congress."

Add your name:

Sign the petition โ–บ

Dear Katy,

Tell Congress: Pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

They clean houses. Care for seniors. Nurse the sick. Raise children. But the reward for the hard work of our nation's more than 2 million domestic workers is low wages, harassment, unsafe work conditions, discrimination and even abuse.1

Eight states already have laws on the books protecting domestic workers, but being protected should not depend on where you live. That's why progressive champions Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Sen. Kamala Harris, working with our friends at the National Domestic Workers Alliance, plan to introduce the Federal Domestic Workers Bill of Rights as soon as the next Congress meets in January.2

We need to make sure that women, people of color and low-income workers are at the top of the Democratic agenda come January – which means speaking up right now while leaders are setting priorities.

Tell Congress: Pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. Click here to sign the petition.

Domestic workers often make less than the minimum wage and rarely get healthcare coverage or any sort of retirement plan. Without protection, their employers can hurl racial slurs or abuse, force them to work odd hours without breaks or sick days and refuse to protect their safety.3

The Federal Domestic Workers Bill of Rights helps in two ways. First, it would extend labor laws to domestic workers. They would get Occupational Safety and Health Administration protections, help in cases of discrimination or harassment, the right to overtime pay, and the ability to form unions.4

Second, the bill would extend essential new protections – like retirement savings, affordable health care, training and development and the right to meal breaks, rest breaks, paid sick days, federal agency protections, contracts on paper, privacy and knowledge about their schedules in advance. These powerful protections could set a new standard for all contingent workers, from Amazon warehouse "contractors" to ride-share drivers.5

Because domestic workers are exempt from basic labor laws, they are a target for abuse and exploitation. And because they are predominantly women of color in a white supremacist society they have a hard time getting the attention and help they deserve. The Federal Domestic Workers Bill of Rights must be at the top of Congress's list of priorities in January.

Sign the petition: Hold Trump's corrupt former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke accountable

Tell House Democrats: Investigate Ryan Zinke

The petition to House Democrats reads:
"Former Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke waged war on our environment, violated federal rules and was mired in unethical behavior. Use your power to hold Zinke accountable and open investigations."

Dear Katy,

Tell House Democrats: Investigate Ryan Zinke

Thanks to the powerful resistance by CREDO members and our progressive allies, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke was forced to resign amid multiple legal and ethical scandals that mired his tenure in government.1

But that shouldn't mean Zinke, who allegedly used his office to enrich himself while launching attacks on public lands and the environment, is off the hook for his role in potential criminal activity. Rep. Raul Grijalva, progressive champion and incoming chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, has signaled plans to conduct official oversight hearings on Zinke's misdeeds in the Trump administration.2

For far too long, corrupt individuals in power, from government officials to Wall Street CEOs, have been given a free pass or a slap on the wrist for their unethical or criminal behavior. This must end now. We must ensure Rep. Grijalva's colleagues have the political will to stand with him and hold Zinke accountable.

Tell House Democrats: Investigate former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Click here to sign the petition.

The number of investigations Zinke faced while in office was more than the last four interior secretaries combined. The actions federal watchdogs have looked at or are looking into include Zinke's threats to a sitting senator, illegal use of a private jet, the removal of references to climate change in scientific reports and multiple violations of the Hatch Act, a law that prohibits executive branch employees from engaging in political activity.3

The most serious allegation against Zinke, about which Rep. Grijalva is most interested, involves a shady, self-enriching and potentially illegal land deal in Montana with the former CEO of oil services giant Halliburton.4 While this case has reportedly been referred to the Department of Justice for review, Congress must also fulfill its duty to conduct independent and thorough oversight, especially given Trump's meddling in personnel and other matters at the DOJ.

Activism to hold Zinke accountable has already proven effective. Zinke's resignation came after more than 114,000 CREDO activists and our progressive allies mounted a massive public pressure campaign to hold Zinke accountable, resulting in his resignation. We now must hold Zinke accountable again. Click the link below to sign the petition:

Sign the petition: Donald Trump lied. Big Pharma just announced price hikes.

Break up Big Pharma monopolies on generic drugs

The petition to Congress reads:
"Pass the Affordable Drug Manufacturing Act, which would break Big Pharma monopolies on generic drugs if they hike prices or deny Americans medicine."

Dear Katy,

Break up Big Pharma monopolies on generic drugs

Donald Trump's Big Pharma friends are once again proving that his grand promises are lies. Big Pharma just announced that price hikes on essential medicine are coming in January 2019.1

Every elected Democrat highlights Trump's hypocrisy on drug prices. But only some Democrats – the progressive wing of the Party – have real, innovative solutions. A new bill from Rep. Jan Schakowsky and Sen. Elizabeth Warren would break up Big Pharma cartels – if they jack up prices and limit access – by publicly manufacturing pharmaceutical drugs.2

It is a smart and bold approach that sets the agenda for the Democratic Party moving forward - and it deserves our urgent support.

Tell Congress: Break up Big Pharma monopolies on generic drugs. Click here to sign the petition.

Millions of Americans with diabetes rely on pharmaceutical insulin – yet Big Pharma monopolies have tripled its price. It is a perfect example of the way the generic pharmaceutical drug system is broken. Generics – the same drug, but without the name brand – are supposed to be available at a lower cost after a set period of time. But anyone who has been to a pharmacy in the last few years knows generic drugs are not always as cheap as Big Pharma wants us to believe.3

Big Pharma monopolies will buy up exclusive rights to generic drug and jack up the price. In some cases, no company will produce a badly needed medicine – or a handful of companies will control the market and line their pockets by charging desperate people more money.4 It's not ok.

Tell Congress: Break up Big Pharma monopolies on generic drugs. Click here to sign the petition.

Rep. Schakowsky and Sen. Warren are out to break these Big Pharma monopolies. Their plan would kick in if no one is manufacturing a drug, if only one or two companies control production and jack up the price, or if Big Pharma raises prices on a World Health Organization "essential medicine." In these cases, the government would have the power to manufacture the drug directly – skipping the profit-making middleman killing and bankrupting America.5

The Schakowsky-Warren bill complements other progressive proposals that CREDO members support. We need every good idea on the table, and we need to show a massive outpouring of support for the ones that boldly take on Big Pharma's monopoly power.
