Sign the petition: Don't let Republicans pick a leader who sweeps sexual assault under the rug

Tell Republicans: Don't make Jim Jordan leader

Tell House Republicans:
"A man accused of covering up sexual assault who blatantly tried to undermine the investigation into 2016 election interference should have no place in leadership. Reject Jim Jordan's bid to be speaker."

Dear Katy,

Tell Republicans: Don't make Jim Jordan leader

Multiple former Ohio State University wrestlers accused Rep. Jim Jordan of helping cover up sexual harassment and abuse, but he could still be the next Republican party leader.1

Shortly after the allegations against Jordan became public, news broke that he had pressured former wrestlers to recant.2 While at first other conservatives distanced themselves from Jordan, in the months since they have continued colloborating with him, indicating they might support his campaign to replace Speaker Paul Ryan, who is resigning.3

The fact that Jordan is still in Congress – and running for leadership at that – is testament to the Republican Party's indifference to sexual assault and harassment, but if enough people speak out, we can remind vulnerable Republicans that someone who covered up for harassment should have no place in leadership.

Tell Republicans in Congress: Oppose Jordan's bid for House leadership. Click here to sign the petition.

As one of Donald Trump's most loyal lapdogs, Jordan has been doing everything in his power to impede Robert Mueller's investigation into Trump's Russia ties.4 Jordan, along with other extreme conservatives, introduced articles of impeachment against Rod Rosenstein, the person overseeing Robert Mueller's investigation into Trump's Russia ties – an outrageous and blatant attempt to discredit Mueller's investigation and protect Trump from Mueller's findings.5

Taking a page out of Trump's playbook, Jordan fueled fringe right-wing conspiracy theories that the OSU allegations are somehow connected to the "deep state" and called the timing – as he launched his run for speaker and tried to initiate Rosenstein's impeachment – suspect.6 In fact, the first wrestler to file a complaint with OSU over repeated abuse by former team doctor Richard Strauss did so in the spring and reportedly reached out to Jordan ahead of time. Jordan instructed him to "leave me out of it."7

After the initial allegations broke, another former wrestler recalled he told Jordan directly after Strauss sexually assaulted him.8 Then, more than six former wrestlers came forward to say they were routinely harassed in their training facility – one of whom said he saw Jordan "yell at male voyeurs to get out of the sauna."9

Jordan reportedly pressured two of the wrestlers who named him as complicit in the cover up to recant. After he and his brother Jeff Jordan called the parents of one former wrestler, that wrestler walked back implicating Jordan.10

With an assaulter-in-chief in the White House, it's not surprising that a Republican candidate for House leadership can so easily dismiss credible allegations that he covered up sexual harassment and abuse. It's also not surprising that Republicans are playing politics instead of standing up for survivors of sexual assault, but with a huge public outcry about Jordan's role in the OSU cover-up, we can ensure they can't sweep this under the rug and elect him as Republican leader.

Right wing attacks Sen. Warren's corporate reform plan

Stand with Sen. Warren: Corporations must answer to workers and communities

"Raise wages and fight inequality by forcing corporations to be accountable to employees and communities, not just shareholders. Support Sen. Elizabeth Warren's Accountable Capitalism Act."

Dear Katy,

Stand with Sen. Warren: Corporations must answer to workers and communities

Conservative corporate puppets launched unhinged verbal attacks on Sen. Elizabeth Warren's new corporate reform bill. They said it is a plan to "nationalize… everything," amounts to "the wholesale expropriation of private enterprise in the United States and nothing less," and would "destroy capitalism."1

They're completely untethered from reality. In truth, Sen. Warren's bill would simply require corporations to care about more than just enriching executives and stockholders.2

We need to show how many of us have Sen. Warren's back and support making corporations accountable to employees and communities.

Stand with Sen. Warren: Corporations must answer to workers and communities. Click here to sign the petition.

Corporations only exist because government-granted charters allow them to profit, for instance, by protecting owners from full liability for anything the corporation does wrong. In return, corporate boards and executives used to believe they had a responsibility to do right by workers and communities as well as competing in the market. That all changed in the 1980s, when corporate executives began to focus narrowly on providing value to shareholders.3

The result? Executives get paid based on how much they can squeeze workers without regard for their health, the environment or the impact on communities. Focusing on shareholder value poured fuel on the flames of inequality. Today, CEOs make on average of 361 times more than their average worker, and the few Americans who own stock get most of the wealth created. Meanwhile, many companies aren't innovating, investing in future production or raising wages.4

Sen. Warren's plan makes corporations accountable to American interests, not their own. It would:5

  • Demand more of corporations. Corporations that rake in more than $1 billion would need to get a federal charter – not a lax state-based one – that includes new responsibilities to take communities and workers into account, modeled on existing "benefit corporations."
  • Give workers more say. Under the new charters, employees would elect at least 40 percent of the corporate board of directors, a model proven effective in countries like Germany. That means workers would have a massive voice in compensating executives and setting priorities.
  • Rein in inequality and political influence. Executives would face new limits on their ability to profit off of the sale of company stock. Corporations would not be able to spend any money influencing elections unless 75 percent of shareholders and directors approve it.

The hate from right-wing Republicans and their Wall Street allies for this plan betrays their loyalty to the super-wealthy over widespread economic growth and raising wages. We need to stand with Sen. Warren and demand corporate reform now.
