They want you to sit down and shut up

Kathleen-

Greenpeace will never back down!

There are a lot of powerful corporations out there that want you and me to sit down and shut up.

At least when it comes to speaking out for the environment.

In fact, companies like Resolute Forest Products, the Canadian logging giant, and Energy Transfer, the energy behemoth behind the notorious Dakota Access Pipeline, are so desperate to silence us that they filed lawsuits against Greenpeace for hundreds of millions of dollars in federal court.

These "Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation" (SLAPPs) are an outrageous attempt to use the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act — the law written to fight organized crime — and defamation claims to criminalize environmental advocacy and free speech rights.

But Greenpeace will never be silenced and we will never back down.

That's why I'm asking you to help us resist these corporate bullies by making a special contribution of $25, $50, or even $500 if at all possible to support all of our work.

Even though these federal lawsuits are utterly baseless — in fact, the RICO claims attempting to criminalize our advocacy work were dismissed in both cases by a federal court earlier this year — the battle is not over. We still must fight Resolute's limited defamation claims in federal court, and Energy Transfer, undeterred by the dismissal of its case in federal court, has filed a new suit against Greenpeace and our allies in state court, repackaging many of its original claims.

What did we do to draw their massive legal fire?

We spoke the truth.

We spoke the truth about how Resolute was irresponsibly logging Canada's Boreal forest, threatening the iconic woodland caribou and other wildlife.

We spoke the truth about how Energy Transfer's disastrous Dakota Access Pipeline threatens the rights of Indigenous communities and would help unleash climate chaos.

And we will go right on speaking the truth, whenever we see giant corporations sacrificing our environment and our future to satisfy their short-term greed.

Because you and I know the only answer to their outrageous attempts to silence us is to turn up the volume even louder.

And that's exactly what we're going to do.

But we need your support, urgently, to fight back against these corporate bullies and defend our right to speak truth to power.

Please make a generous gift to support Greenpeace's advocacy on behalf of our planet.

Thank you for standing with us, for adding your voice to ours, and for never backing down to corporate bullies.

Sincerely,

Annie Leonard
Executive Director, Greenpeace USA

P.S. These lawsuits are a sign of how effective our voice — your voice — is and how desperate corporations are to silence us. Please make a generous contribution to Greenpeace today. It's quick, it's easy, and it's secure. And it keeps us speaking truth to power. Thanks again.

Greenpeace never takes a dime from corporations or governments. Everything we do is thanks to the generous support of people like you!
