Kathleen- This groundbreaking report points to extinction for 1 million species. That's unacceptable. Truly terrifying. Today, after an exhaustive 3-year study, the UN's foremost body on biodiversity released some incredibly grim news. We're facing an unprecedented rate of species loss, with 1 million plants and animals facing extinction.1 The cost to ecosystems is immense, and the projected impact on billions of people is staggering. This moment demands urgent action to protect forests and oceans, fundamentally shift agriculture and food production, and take immediate action on climate. Today's report from the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is a wake-up call to action for all of us. Governments must start putting people and the planet ahead of corporate interests and greed and act with the urgency this report illustrates. Leaders must adopt strong targets and implementation plans to protect biodiversity with the active participation and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Instead of plundering the forests and seas for short-term profit we need to shift our system into one that respects planetary boundaries. The time to rise together is now.
