| Dear Katy, It's time for Congress to shut down Amazon's surveillance empire. Amazon's Alexa records our conversations.1 Its Rekognition technology identifies our faces and tracks our movement in the public sphere.2 And Amazon's Ring doorbell gives local police backdoor, warrantless access to mass surveillance footage collected from millions of American homes and neighborhoods3 That is beyond unacceptable. Amazon's surveillance technology threatens our privacy and civil liberties, especially in Black, Brown and low-income communities already vulnerable to racial profiling and heightened police surveillance. Amazon will continue to quietly expand its surveillance empire if Congress does not intervene. Speak out to demand that Congress investigate and rein in Amazon now. Tell Congress: Investigate Amazon. Click here to sign the petition. Amazon's business model is built on mining and exploiting data from our personal and public lives. Amazon Ring's partnership with police is a perfect example of how the company is trying to create a massive, branded takeover of surveillance in our communities. Amazon has close relationships with law enforcement in over 200 cities across the country. Police departments are now salespeople for Ring, marketing it to communities as a way to keep homes and neighborhoods safe. But that's far from the truth. Amazon hands over footage from Ring's doorbell cameras to the cops, effectively making each and every one of our houses an extension of the police.4 And it's not just the police partnership that makes Amazon products dangerous. Data collected by Ring cameras is not secure. Some devices have already leaked customers' Wi-Fi passwords to open networks, leaving users vulnerable to cyber-attacks, hackers and government interference.5,6 We cannot let Amazon continue to help law enforcement spy on our communities and put our personal data at risk. Amazon is gaining too much power and access to our everyday lives. Congress has to investigate and question Amazon Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff about the company's business practices and the threats its nationwide surveillance network pose to our security, privacy and civil liberties. It's going to take all of us to make sure our leaders investigate Amazon and stop its surveillance empire. Showing Congress that there is massive support for immediate oversight is a critical step.
