| Dear Katy, Mateo Carmelo-Bartolo was shopping with his family when Border Patrol agents approached him because he looked Central American and was speaking Spanish. They arrested him, and now he's sitting in an immigrant detention center facing the risk of deportation.1 This is a textbook case of racial profiling. Every single day, Black and Brown people are being targeted by law enforcement because of their language or the color of their skin – despite the fact that we are all entitled to equal protection under the law, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Racial profiling violates our Constitution and puts the lives of hundreds of thousands of people at risk. It's time our representatives act now and pass the End Racial Profiling Act. Racial profiling is a crisis that has an impact on communities of color at a striking rate. When police initiate an interaction with a person of color, they are twice as likely to threaten or use force as in an interaction with a white person.2 Encounters with racist police are a leading cause of death for young Black men.3 This is a national crisis. The End Racial Profiling Act would prohibit federal, state and local law enforcement from targeting a person based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation without legitimate information linking a person to a crime. It would also mandate training on racial profiling and codify policies and procedures to collect data to adequately respond to complaints of racial profiling and violence. 4 Even when racial profiling is not deadly, it is wrong. Our country's history is deeply rooted in racism and systemic oppression. Racial profiling is a reminder that our present institutions are still rooted in that history. The lives of people of color are at risk every single day that our elected representatives refuse to take immediate action on a federal level to address this crisis.
