Recent reports reveal that Google has a nearly $750,000 contract to provide cloud services to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).1 USCIS is supposed to be a service focused agency for immigrants, but under the Trump regime, it is acting as an extension of ICE and CBP, helping to carry out deportation traps.2 By working with USCIS, Google is supercharging Trump's war on immigrants. We must put a stop to this dangerous collaboration now. Hundreds of Googlers and other tech workers have signed an internal petition demanding that the company end its contract with USCIS. Time and time again, Google publicizes its commitment to creating an ethical technology. Google's AI principles state that the company will not build technology "whose purpose contravenes widely accepted principles of international law and human rights."3 What immigration agencies are doing at our border is in absolute violation of human rights and international law. By working with them, Google is violating its own values. Hypocrisy on Google's part is only one layer of the issue. Giving tech services to immigration agencies only enables them to violate human rights faster. Technology automates mass atrocity and tech firms are part of an ugly history. During World War II, IBM directly supplied Nazis with technology used to transport millions of people to concentration camps.4 The situation with Google is no different. The Trump regime is hurtling us toward authoritarianism and criminalizing people based on the color of their skin and the country in which they were born. In fact, USCIS recently changed its mission statement from "securing America's promise as a nation of immigrants" to "protecting Americans, securing the homeland and honoring our values."5 History is telling and very clear. We need to raise our voices with Google employees to tell Google that the time to say no is right now or risk being on the wrong side of history. Tell Google: Stop enabling human rights violations.
