Hurricane Dorian has already claimed the lives of 50 Bahamians and displaced thousands more.1 Many of those who survived are now climate refugees who are making their way to the United States. Predictably, Donald Trump is trying to spread anti-Black, anti-refugee hysteria in a desperate attempt to keep them out of the country.2 We must fight back. Reps. Yvette Clarke, Barbara Lee and Stacey Plaskett just introduced legislation that would allow Bahamians to work and live in the United States for 18 months while the country rebuilds. Storms, droughts and floods will only become more extreme as our planet warms and climate deniers like Donald Trump consolidate power. That means climate disasters will displace more and more people around the world, and fast. The TPS for Victims of Hurricane Dorian Act offers a humanitarian solution to Bahamians survivors of mass climate displacement. It would grant Temporary Protected Status for the Bahamas, allowing Bahamians whose homes and communities were decimated by hurricane Dorian to live and work in the United States without fear of deportation. This bill has little chance of passing in the Republican-controlled Senate, but we can and must build momentum for it now. Already, Senate Republicans are feeling pressure to provide relief to Bahamian citizens.3 CBP Head Mark Morgan is also feeling the heat after video footage leaked of immigration agents forcing hundreds of Dorian evacuees off a ferry at a border entry point.4 Now, he is giving his agents the green light to allow Bahamian citizens to enter the country whether they have travel documents or not. But entry without protection from deportation is not nearly enough. We must use our voices to shine a bright light on the dangers of the Trump regime's anti-Black racism and persistent climate denial and demand that Congress support policies that push back. Every member of Congress must make a choice: Will they enable Trump's hate and help close our borders to Black climate change survivors or lead with moral clarity and pass policies that welcome them?
