Dear Katy,

Tell the Department of Labor: Don't give employers a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people

The Trump administration will stop at nothing to ensure that LGBTQ rights and protections are systematically dismantled. His latest attack is another act of taxpayer-funded discrimination that encourages employers to turn away LGBTQ people, women and other individuals on the basis of "religious freedom."

The Department of Labor recently announced a proposal that would allow employers who are federal contractors to use their religious beliefs to justify discrimination in their hiring decisions.1 The proposed rule would essentially encourage employers to turn away prospective employees on the basis of sex, gender or sexual orientation. That puts hundreds of thousands of workers at risk for discrimination.

We need to show that there is massive public opposition to this rule. If you sign now, we will include your signature in our public comment to the Department of Labor.

The proposed rule is a blatant act of discrimination and an attack on the rights of LGBTQ people under the guise of religious freedom. In addition to dismantling the hard-fought rights of LGBTQ people, the rule would also allow employers to fire unmarried pregnant workers, employees who are using birth control or fertility services, people who may not share their religious beliefs, or people who refuse to sign a statement of faith.2

Federal civil rights law prohibits this form of discrimination in the workplace – but the Trump administration is taking a sledgehammer to these laws. Trump is weaponizing religious freedom to marginalize and target LGBTQ people and is actively challenging nondiscrimination protections and rights through the courts and executive actions but we need to show this administration that there is massive public opposition.

The Department of Labor is accepting public comments until Monday. If you believe that everyone deserves equality and the right to live and work as their full selves, then voice your opposition to Trump's proposed rule. Your name will be included in a comment submitted to the Department of Labor. Can you add your name today?
