Dear Katy,

No

The Trump Tax Scam made the rich richer and failed to raise wages. That's why Americans dislike it more than ever.1

But despite all the evidence, Republicans in the House are moving forward with "Round 2" of the Trump Tax Scam, which would make make the tax giveaways to the wealthiest individuals permanent.2 The tax giveaways just cleared a first committee hurdle and are headed toward a vote in the House.

In the white-hot heat of an election season, there will be temptation for corporate Democrats to betray working people and support the Trump Tax Scam "Round 2." We can't let that happen.

The Trump Tax Scam was immoral from the start. It could end up wiping away health care coverage for 13 million people by sabotaging the Affordable Care Act's protections that keep healthy people in insurance markets. International corporations got a massive tax handout despite sitting on billions in offshore profits while Americans lose health care coverage. Poor and middle-income Americans got pocket change while the Donald Trump and the super-rich donors who fund Republican political campaigns pocketed big money.3

Then it got worse – just as we all predicted. Instead of raising wages, corporations funneled the tax giveaways to executives and shareholders through stock buybacks. The bill did not pay for itself, as Republicans claimed it would. Instead, Trump and Republicans began using the lost revenue as an excuse to push $1.7 trillion in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and other earned benefits.4 The Trump Tax Scam has gotten less popular since the day it passed.5

But Republicans have zero economic policy ideas other than tax giveaways for the wealthy, so they are back for a second round. Unlike the corporate tax giveaways, the individual tax cuts in the original bill are set to expire in a few years. The top 5 percent of Americans get more than 60 percent of the benefit, so Republicans' new plan is to make these handouts to its corporate donors permanent as well.6,7

As it becomes clear that tax giveaways do nothing but fuel inequality, vulnerable House Republicans are under pressure. But there is a real risk that weak-willed corporate Democrats will ignore all the evidence of failure and unpopularity and decide to help Donald Trump and Republicans. It's up to us to make sure these proposals go nowhere.
