Dear Katy,

Republicans want to end the investigation into Trump's Russia ties. We cannot let them.

Republicans have sought every chance to delegitimize special counsel Robert Mueller. Now, they are ramping up their attempts to derail Mueller's inquiry into Trump's Russia ties with calls to shut down the parallel, ongoing congressional investigations, thus making it appear as if Mueller is on a wild goose chase.1

Republicans have spent months stymying the investigation by refusing to schedule interviews with key witnesses and sitting on requests from Democrats to subpoena relevant documents. Now powerful House Republican leaders such as Rep. Trey Gowdy – an extreme right-wing Republican ideologue – are reportedly talking about shutting down the investigation.2 This is unacceptable.

Trump's lapdogs in Congress are making up excuses to conclude their investigation into Trump's Russia ties to pressure Mueller to end his investigation – and shut down Democrats like Rep. Adam Schiff who have relentlessly pursued the truth. We need a large outcry right now to shame Republicans into continuing their investigation.

There is no way congressional investigators have actually finished their work. No one yet knows the full extent of Trump's ties to Russia, and special counsel Mueller keeps uncovering new information that warrants congressional investigation.

Republicans are sabotaging an investigation with national security implications. House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes repeatedly refused requests from his Democratic colleagues for interviews with as many as 30 witnesses and blocked potential subpoenas of relevant documents.3 Financial crimes are notoriously difficult to uncover, and thorough investigations can take years.4

It is evident the investigation to date has not been sufficiently thorough. Democratic Congressman Jim Himes says that there are so many unanswered questions that Democrats would have to list them in a minority report if Republicans get their way. 5

Mueller and the congressional investigators have two different jobs. Mueller's narrow focus is on whether anyone connected to the Trump organization – or Trump himself – committed specific crimes by coordinating with Russians. Congress is investigating Russia's attempt to hijack our democracy and whether Trump or his campaign engaged in shameful and improper collusion with Russia even if it does not violate specific laws. Congress' responsibility is to ensure thorough fact finding to uncover answers for the American public. Republicans are refusing to get the real facts in a bid to undermine Robert Mueller, and we cannot let that happen.

The effort to derail Mueller began among fringe supporters and the alt-right fake news, but Trump Republicans are now blatantly launching a systematic and coordinated attack on his investigation. The current Republican attempts to end the ongoing congressional investigations are part of an alliance with the extreme right-wing and Trump sycophants in Congress to systematically undermine Mueller and his investigation.6 By insisting that there are no other questions to ask, or evidence to examine, Republicans hope to create a media firestorm from the extreme right wing that will either shut down or sabotage Mueller's investigation.

The public has a right to know the extent of the potential collusion between Trump and his associates and the Kremlin. As long as there are witnesses to interview, and questions remain, Congress must keep up this crucial work.
