Trader Joe’s Feels the Heat

Image

Kathleen-

Trader Joe's to remove 1 million pounds of plastic … but plenty more where that came from!

It's gross. I'm surrounded by plastic no matter where we go. And I can't get over how much of the stuff will end up in the ocean choking seabirds, turtles, and whales.

But we just got some good news — proof that people-power is making a difference on plastic pollution. Trader Joe's is listening to YOUR concerns and announced a plan to eliminate 1 million pounds of single-use plastic from its stores in 2019.1

Trader Joe's announcement is a step in the right direction —  the retailer has committed to stop offering single-use carryout bags nationwide, replace its produce bags with biodegradable and compostable options, replace Styrofoam trays used in packaging, and sell more loose produce rather than wrapping it in plastic. But Trader Joe's doesn't go nearly far enough. There's plenty more plastic — way more than 1 million pounds — that Trader Joe's needs to remove from its stores.

Now is the time to keep the pressure on. We can't let Trader Joe's off the hook with half measures. Will you chip in right now to help end single-use plastic — and support all of our campaigns — with a special donation today?

Our oceans are facing a plastic crisis: the five trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans can circle the world 400 times. And the United Nations Environment Programme estimates that hundreds of thousands of sea creatures are killed by plastic pollution every year.

That's why we need your help ramping up the campaign to #BreakFreeFromPlastic. Trader Joe's is clearly feeling the heat, but there's so much more throwaway plastic left on its shelves. And Trader Joe's is just one supermarket — we're calling on all supermarkets to ditch single-use plastics and immediately start shifting towards systems of refill and reuse.

In the next months, we'll mobilize thousands of more volunteers, release a hard-hitting report, and use creative action to make sure supermarkets can't ignore your message.

Will you please continue to power all of our campaigns with a special donation today?

Every step of the way, supporters like you have been with us in this historic campaign to transform our throwaway culture and create a sustainable future.

Already, over 140,000 of you have signed petitions to supermarkets; hundreds of you recently joined us in a conference call to learn more about how to combat plastic pollution; dozens of you hosted movie screenings; and, over 250 of you conducted surveys of single-use plastic at Trader Joe's and other supermarkets.

Thank you Kathleen, for everything that you've done and continue to do!

Together, we're making history — and I know I can count on you to continue to tell plastic polluters to #BreakFreeFromPlastic

Please make a special donation today to continue to power our movement!
