Tell Democrats: Use your leverage to block Trump attacks

Petition to congressional Democrats:
"Hold the line against Republican attempts to sneak attacks on women, the environment and Wall Street reform into must-pass end-of-year legislation and use all of your leverage to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals participants and to reinstate the Children's Health Insurance Program."

Dear Katy,

Tell Democrats: Use your leverage to block Trump attacks

This December, Democrats have all the leverage. They better use it.

Congress passed a three-month stopgap funding measure this fall that expires in December. Because of extreme right-wing House members, Republicans cannot pass government funding bills without Democratic help.1

Passing another stopgap measure would result in mandatory January cuts to military spending, which Trump Republicans despise.2

We need to make sure Democrats use this leverage to protect people under attack from Trump and his goons.

Trump has taken real steps to deport Americans who have never known another home: the Dreamers.3

Republicans just stole health care from 9 million children by letting the Children's Health Insurance Program expire.4

Every day, Republicans in Congress plot new attacks – attacks on women and women's health, people experiencing poverty, rules fighting back against the big banks, our public lands and common skies and immigrants and people of color.

December is our chance to protect those under threat, and start undoing the damage. But for that to happen, Democrats cannot roll over. They cannot prioritize big donors or the Washington cocktail circuit. Democrats must be willing to be firm and unyielding and use their leverage to protect all of us, so we need to start building their courage right now.

We know we can count on many progressive champions to do the right thing. Already, Rep. Luis Gutierrez has threatened to allow a government shutdown in order to protect Dreamers.5 But we need every member of the caucus to care just as much.

The deal that Democratic leaders struck with Trump in September expires in December. If Republicans try a continuing resolution to just keep funding at the same level, they will run into budget caps imposed by a ridiculous 2011 law, meaning cuts to military contractors who make big donations.6 Democrats have every bit of leverage – the only question is whether they are willing to use it. That is where we come in.
