What to do after Charlottesville?

Greenpeace

Kathleen —

Are you angry and horrified by what happened this weekend in Charlottesville? You're not alone. I am too.

Armed white supremacists marched through the streets of Charlottesville, calling for genocide and attacking people. A young woman was murdered and 19 other people were injured when a terrorist plowed through a crowded street in his car. A young black man was beaten severely by white supremacists with poles.

Many people are now wondering what we can do to stand up to this kind of violence, hate, and white supremacy. It starts with following the leadership of people of color who have been fighting these fights for years and decades.

That's why I'm asking you to join me and Color of Change (the nation's largest online racial justice organization) in calling on corporate leaders — like JP Morgan Chase's CEO Jamie Dimon — to step down from Trump's business councils.

What happened in Charlottesville is horrifying, but it's not an isolated incident. Violent hate groups have become more and more active, supported by our nation's long history of institutional racism and emboldened by a President who put white supremacists in his senior staff and espouses virulently racist views with impunity.

Earlier this year, Greenpeace members helped convince Disney's CEO Bob Iger to step down from Trump's business council. And just in the past four days, three more business leaders — the CEOs of Intel, Under Armour, and Merck — have stepped down.

Tell corporate leaders that sitting on Trump's councils is an endorsement of hate-filled and racist rhetoric. Please send this message today!

Some have asked Greenpeace why we speak out on issues of racial justice. The answer is simple: racial justice is key to the green and peaceful future we stand for. Not only do environmental and health impacts of climate change and water pollution hurt communities of color disproportionately, but the fossil fuel industry and other polluters have historically used systems of racial inequality and white supremacy to further their corporate agendas.

This is the moment where we must all stand up and say that racism and white supremacy will not be tolerated or cooperated with. If we stand together against hate, we can move towards a greener and more peaceful future.

Thank you,

Sarah Rasmussen

P.S. Now is the time for us to stand together and stand against hate. Please take action today.
