Dear Katy,

Tell Mitch McConnell: Stop blocking election security legislation

The scale is staggering: Russia targeted election systems in all 50 states in 2016.1 And it's not over. "They're doing it as we sit here," Robert Mueller told Congress on Wednesday.2

But Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell does not care. He personally blocked election security legislation in the Senate less than 24 hours after Mueller testified.3

McConnell is so committed to stealing elections for Republicans that he is making protecting our democracy a partisan issue. We need to raise our voices now.

Every voice of outrage shines a glaring spotlight on McConnell's betrayal of American values.

The biggest new takeaway from Mueller's testimony was the depth of Mueller's concern about Russia:4

Over the course of my career, I've seen a number of challenges to our democracy. The Russian government's effort to interfere in our election is among the most serious. As I said on May 29, this deserves the attention of every American.

On top of Mueller's concerns, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report Thursday acknowledging the 50-state scope of Russian attacks in 2016, confirming that we remain vulnerable and suggesting a long list of necessary fixes that some senators said was still not nearly enough to meet the threat.5

The legislation McConnell killed already passed the House of Representatives and would have "given states hundreds of millions of dollars in grants, mandated the use of backup paper ballots and required risk-limiting post-election audits."6 It would also force campaigns to report attempts by foreign entities to influence or hijack our elections and protect against hacking attempts aimed at the personal devices or accounts of elected officials and staff. Senate Democrats attempted to pass it with unanimous consent, but Republican senators rose to object and blocked the bills twice in 24 hours – and the second time, Mitch McConnell did it personally.
