Sign the petition: Ban assault weapons now

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough.

The petition to Republicans in Congress reads:
"Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now. Pass common-sense legislation to address gun violence in the United States, including an immediate ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines."

Dear Katy,

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough.

Last night at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, a man with an assault rifle opened fire seemingly randomly, leaving 15 injured and three dead, including a six-year-old boy.1 The night before in Brooklyn, one man was killed and 11 others were injured when gunfire erupted at a community event near a playground.2 Our hearts ache for the victims and their loved ones.

We know from past experience that Republican politicians without the courage to support real solutions to gun violence will offer their thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families.

But thoughts and prayers won't stop the next mass shooting. We need gun control now.

Tragic mass shootings have become all too common – and they're getting deadlier. Since the fall of 2017, we have had three of the 10 deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.3

In New Zealand, after a gunman shot and killed 50 people earlier this year at two mosques, it took lawmakers just three days to pass legislation banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines4 But the NRA has a chokehold on Congress that keeps most bills about gun control from even coming to the floor for a vote. Politicians beholden to – or afraid of – the NRA is willing to turn their backs on their constituents when it comes time to implement reasonable limits and controls on guns.5

Finally breaking the NRA's chokehold on Congress will require massive grassroots pressure on our elected officials, demanding that they deliver more than thoughts and prayers in the face of our epidemic of gun violence.
