Kathleen- Demand the Senate reject Barry Myers! I have some maddening news. For a third time now, Trump has nominated Barry Myers, a nominee who is problematic on multiple levels, to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Myers is not a scientist, which alone should disqualify him, but he's also called for the privatization of public agencies and during his time as Accuweather CEO, the company was fined for failing to protect women from sexual harassment. NOAA's work on studying physical science, the atmosphere, and the climate is critical. Myers is a businessman — not a scientist(!) — making him grossly unqualified to head the agency. Previous NOAA administrators have been trained and accomplished geologists, astronauts — actual scientists! To throw a wrench in this outrageous nomination, Greenpeace is joining groups around the country to demand the Senate reject Barry Myers. Add your name and join us! In addition to not being qualified for the position, the nomination of Myers is a huge conflict of interest. Myers, as a former AccuWeather CEO, has called for the privatization of the National Weather Service, which is counter to NOAA's role as a public agency. We deserve a NOAA administrator who will serve the public interest and support accurate, scientific research, NOT another Trump crony. Sign the petition to reject Barry Myers for NOAA. In addition to a lack of credentials and conflict of interest concerns, AccuWeather, under Myers's watch, is mired in sexual harassment and assault allegations.1 Dozens of AccuWeather employees allege "widespread sexual harassment," prompting the Department of Labor to investigate when Myers was first nominated in 2017. Due to AccuWeather's failure to protect women employees, they were fined $290,000. In solidarity, Gabriel Smalley [1] usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2019-04-16/report-widespread-harassment-at-company-led-by-barry-myers-trumps-noaa-nominee Greenpeace never takes a dime from corporations or governments.
