Dear Katy,

ICE is planning to use hotels as jails for immigrants

Donald Trump postponed his mass ICE raids, but his attacks on our communities continue. We need to build up our defenses now.

Over the weekend, news broke of ICE's plan to use hotels as temporary jails for immigrant round-ups. ICE uses this tactic often.1 In fact, we know that budget hotel chains within Best Western, Choice, Drury, G6 Hospitality, Hilton, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott, Red Roof and Wyndham have collaborated with ICE in the past.

It's time we use our power as customers and consumers to expose the dangerous collaboration between hotels and ICE and demand that hotel chains stop working with ICE immediately.

We've all seen images and read stories of the horrific immigrant concentration camps along the southern border.2 These overcrowded and often make-shift shelters and camps are inhumane and violate human rights. Every person, company and organization who enables the regime that runs them will be judged harshly by history.

Hotels should never work with ICE, but many of them do.3 Most ICE detention centers don't allow families or children, so the agency often uses hotel rooms to lock them up before it transfers them to a facility. Since Trump's plan to round-up immigrants en masse will target many families with final deportation orders, demanding that hotels stop collaborating with ICE is one way to throw a wrench in Trump's racist agenda.

Dehumanizing immigrants, rounding them up and detaining them indefinitely are all clear signs of what horrors could come next. To stop Trump's hateful regime, we must form a firm line of defense and use all the tools at our disposal to undermine his plans and weaken his deportation force. Getting hotels to stop letting ICE use their properties as jails for immigrants could make a huge difference.
