We have 11 years to act

Will 11 years be enough time?

A recent report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that if we are going to have even a chance of holding the global average temperature increase to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius, CO2 emissions must be declining steeply by 2030.

That's why we're launching a new campaign to convince our most valued Greenpeace supporters to invest in the future of the planet by funding all of Greenpeace's critical work.

We need to get the new Congress to adopt a Green New Deal to lower carbon emissions, stop new fossil fuel expansion (like tar sands pipelines and Arctic drilling), and reverse our descent into planetary destruction. We need to stop the wholesale destruction of ecosystems from the Arctic to the rainforests that remove tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. We need to convince corporations and individuals alike to shift to renewable energy sources — and rewrite the rules to support them.

And in order to succeed with this and all of our vital campaigns, we need you to take your support of Greenpeace to the next level.

Please reaffirm your commitment to the planet by becoming a monthly contributor. Monthly gifts are a steady resource we can count on at a moment's notice. We rely on this unwavering support to fund the many battles we have to fight. Your contribution of $11 each month, to mark the 11 years we have in which to act, will be invaluable to our cause.

Keep in mind, Kathleen, that holding the increase in average temperatures below 1.5 degrees is not a best-case scenario — it's an absolute necessity. With that much global warming, polar ice sheets will be destabilized, 90% of the world's corals could die, and communities in the Arctic and around the globe will face tremendous challenges. But with more warming, the impacts will be even worse. We have to fight like hell so that everyone — including you and me — can survive.

Greenpeace's people-powered movement has racked up many victories in 48 years, and we'll have to draw on all of our experience and winning strategies to take on this existential threat. We are fighting to keep the planet habitable. I know we can succeed as we have so many times in the past … but only if we all — every one of us — do what must be done. We need you to invest in the planet's future by starting your membership in Greenpeace today.

For the planet,

Annie Leonard
Executive Director, Greenpeace USA

P.S. According to a recent Monmouth University poll, 80 percent of Is all Americans — realize that climate change is real, and 54 percent of us consider it a "very serious" problem. A Quinnipiac University poll showed that nearly two-thirds of voters — 64 percent — think the United States needs to be doing more to address climate change. The will is there, but we need uncompromising action to channel it in the right direction. Help us achieve what so many of us want by becoming a monthly Greenpeace supporter.

Greenpeace never takes a dime from corporations or governments. Everything we do is thanks to the generous support of people like you!
