| Dear Katy, People who caged and abused children should be held accountable for their crimes, not rewarded. Former DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen not only carried out Trump's cruel family separation policy, but also publicly defended it. Already, Trump regime allies are trying to spin and clean up her record as she enters the next phase of her career.1 We must push back now. Criminals like Nielsen shouldn't be able to move on with their lives as if nothing happened while thousands of immigrants are still suffering because of their actions. Nielsen and all enablers of family separation could eventually face accountability in U.S. or international court but we have the power to levy financial and social consequences on them now. Ripping families apart at the border, incarcerating toddlers and then losing track of thousands of children are unconscionable acts. Every person who collaborated with Trump in this draconian scheme and helped him manufacture a racist border crisis has committed egregious crimes against humanity. This chapter of our history will never be closed until we make sure these officials pay for their crimes and the government reunites the families it tore apart. CREDO organized the first protest at Nielsen's Virginia home. We also projected the images of immigrants who died in CBP custody on the garage of Nielsen's replacement, and current CBP commissioner, Kevin McAleenan. Our bold activism is showing Trump enablers that there is a personal cost to hurting immigrants. And it's working to jam up his hateful regime. Recent reports reveal that it's becoming more and more difficult for the administration to identify and permanently place officials willing to enact Trump's cruel immigration policies.2 Now, we need to keep the momentum going. We cannot allow Nielsen and collaborators like her to clean up their records and move on with their careers without consequence.
