Kathleen-

I'm writing from the Hill in Washington, D.C. where myself — Irene, your favorite Swamp Monster — and a few pals came to confront Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for moving to confirm former fossil fuel lobbyist David Bernhardt as the Secretary of the Interior.

And, it's been one hell of a (unconventional) fight.

You may not know me, but I'm the person that wore the "swamp monster" mask at Bernhardt's Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing that went viral two weeks ago.

I wanted to personally let you know that we delivered your concerns around Bernhardt's itch to drill for more oil on public lands and waters across the country, along with 195,000 petition signatures that we collected this month, and sent a strong message to the Senate — you can choose to look the other way when it comes to Bernhardt's shady dealings and conflicts of interest with the fossil fuel industry, but the people will not.

And, it's been one hell of a (unconventional) fight.

Is it weird that I put on my best suit and a swamp monster mask to pay a visit to Mitch McConnell's office? Sure. But not as weird as putting Bernhardt in charge of our country's public lands and waters. Bernhardt is a true swamp creature — a career lobbyist who's spent his two years inside the White House making his former fossil fuel clients' dreams come true.

Bernhardt does not have people's livelihoods and the planet at heart — so we need to work extra hard to help protect public lands by stopping the deregulation of environmental protections, share Indigenous voices stopping oil and gas drilling on sacred lands, and make sure industry doesn't poison communities by fast-tracking environmental assessments.

Thanks so much for your relentless resistance in helping drain Trump's swamp. He's got more private interests on his cabinet than a corporate boardroom — that's why using your voice to constantly pressure our elected leaders to put people and the planet before the 1% is so so important.

Thanks again for all you do, and I'll be speaking to you very soon!
