Kathleen —

The climate crisis is not part of some far-off, sci-fi, dystopian future. It is here!

Our planet today is the hottest it's been in over 2,000 years and is on track to grow hotter than it has been in two million years. And that will spell disaster.

Extreme heat waves are increasing in severity and frequency, and they are deadly. But not everyone is paying the same price.

While fossil fuel executives can afford to buy second homes, vulnerable communities and people of color are being hit the hardest with health impacts and threats to both their lives and livelihoods.

This isn't just a matter of environmental urgency. It's a matter of justice. We have to fight for both people and the planet! Your donation to Greenpeace USA can now be matched up to a total of $10,000 to support our climate campaign and all of our critical work together. But only until August 31. Please make a gift that can be doubled now!

Kathleen, we know that fossil fuel executives' priority is not people and is definitely not the planet - it is profit. Exxon executives were first warned 44 years ago that the results of burning fossil fuels could be catastrophic for the planet. They could have pivoted. They could have sounded an alarm bell for all to hear, and invested in sustainable energy like wind and solar. They could have stopped asking the federal government for more subsidies and more public lands leases for the extraction of oil, gas, and coal.

Instead, they dug in. Literally. They kept mining and drilling — and they have spent decades sowing doubt about climate change. But now, the truth is out and you know it, and they can't delay or mislead any longer.

Once again, we see that environmental issues and social issues are inextricably linked. What harms the planet hurts people, too. That's why, at Greenpeace USA, we're advancing urgently needed climate solutions, and rebuilding the country's unjust social, environmental, and economic systems from the ground up to address the climate crisis, advance racial justice, and build an economy that puts people first.

We're also standing up for wildlife. Climate change isn't only hurting polar bears. It's fueling the extinction crisis. Sea turtles and coral reefs are at risk. So are moose, red knots, and wolverines.

We can't trust fossil fuel companies to do the right thing — not for wildlife, and not for us. And we can't trust the government to stand up to industry. Instead, we must be the ones to lead the way to a healthier, safer, more peaceful and liveable future.

Please, don't let them burn your future out from under your feet. Fight back now, with two times the impact.

For people and the planet,

Ebony Twilley Martin
Co-Executive Director, Greenpeace USA
