Dear Katy,

Tell Mitch McConnell: Recuse yourself from Trump's impeachment trial

"No court in the country would allow a member of the jury to also serve as the accused's defense attorney."1 But that's Mitch McConnell's plan for Donald Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate.

McConnell recently declared on Fox News that he will not be an impartial juror in the upcoming impeachment trial, saying that he's "coordinating with the White House counsel. There will be no difference between the president's position and our position as to how to handle this to the extent that we can."2

Senate rules require all members of the Senate, who act as jurors in the impeachment trial, to swear under oath to remain impartial.3 McConnell is stacking the deck ahead of time to ensure an unfair and completely biased trial to keep Trump in office. He must recuse himself immediately.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee voted to send two articles of impeachment to the House floor for a vote – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – and the full House of Representatives is expected to vote on Wednesday to impeach Trump and forward the process to the Senate for a trial, likely beginning in mid-January.

After McConnell admitted on live television that he would do everything he could to rig the impeachment trial in "total coordination" with Trump's White House, Rep. Val Demings accused McConnell of sabotaging the trial and violating his oath to remain impartial ahead of time, demanding that McConnell recuse himself.4 A growing chorus of Democrats are joining the call to prevent a sham trial with McConnell's predetermined outcome in the Senate.5

McConnell's blatant disregard for the Constitution in order to keep a misogynistic, racist criminal in the White House is beyond reprehensible. We must demand that he recuse himself immediately and increase the pressure on every Republican to ensure the trial is fair and legitimate. Click the link below to sign the petition:
