Tell Facebook: Don't help the government spy on us The petition to Facebook reads: "Don't let the FBI use private contractors to invade our privacy." Add your name: Dear Katy, The FBI wants to get its hands on your social media. Hoping that we wouldn't notice, the agency posted a public job proposal aimed at hiring a firm to make a tool to spy on our social media.1 The FBI wants us to think that this new tool will protect us, especially in the wake of many recent acts of violence organized by white supremacists online. But in reality, the FBI is actively ignoring and protecting white supremacists and targeting progressive activists instead.2 If the FBI gains real-time access to our social media, it will be even easier for the agency to surveil all of us without a warrant or probable cause. This is a massive violation of our privacy. We must make sure that social media platforms refuse to comply. After recent public backlash, Twitter announced that it would not allow developers to access user data if the FBI software violates its privacy policy.3 Now, we need to turn up the pressure on Facebook. Dragnet surveillance historically and disproportionately harms communities of color, immigrants and activists. This broad and overreaching type of surveillance doesn't make us safer, it only invites in power-hungry, profit-seeking firms to break privacy rules that social media platforms put in place to protect us. The tool that the FBI wants would allow them to enter your email address, phone number or username to access your Facebook in real time. FBI agents could then access all of your information via their computers and mobile devices. This means that everything you post on your timeline, talk about in chats and "like" in private groups will not only be property of the FBI, but become vulnerable to hacking.4 The civil rights and data safety concerns make this an issue that affects us all. It is important to remember that we have the power to make change in both the government and tech companies. The government should not be using social media companies as another arm of power. And companies should be protecting their users. If Twitter can do it, so can Facebook. Speak out now to keep the pressure on Facebook to make the right choice and say no to the FBI.
