Dear Katy,

Emergency petition: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now.

Sunday night in Las Vegas, a lone gunman rained gunfire down on a country music concert, killing 59 people and sending more than 500 to the hospital. It was one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.1

Republicans in Congress – who have fought for years to block any legislation that would protect Americans from gun violence – were quick to offer their "thoughts and prayers" in response. But thoughts and prayers are not enough to keep weapons of war out of dangerous hands and begin to address our country's horrific gun violence epidemic.

It is time for Republicans in Congress to join Democrats in standing up to the National Rifle Association and pass commonsense gun control laws that will save American lives.

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now. Click here to sign the petition.

Sunday's shooting is far from an isolated incident. According to Newsweek's John Haltiwanger, there have now been "273 mass shootings and over 11,000 deaths from gun violence in America" in 2017 alone.2

But instead of working to protect Americans from the gun violence epidemic, Republicans in Congress are planning to vote as soon as this week on two bills that would make Americans even more vulnerable to gun violence:

  • The SHARE Act (H.R. 3668), which would repeal restrictions on gun silencers and make it harder to detect the source of gunfire during mass shootings.3
  • The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 38), which would undermine state efforts to protect residents from gun violence by forcing states to recognize concealed carry permits issued by any other state, no matter how lax the state's permitting standards are.4

We must forcefully demand that Congress reject both of these dangerous pieces of legislation and take immediate action to ban weapons of war, including assault weapons and large capacity magazines. Please add your name to our emergency petition now.

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now. Click here to sign the petition.

Stephen Paddock, the suspect in the Las Vegas shooting, reportedly had at least 23 guns in the hotel room he used as a sniper perch.6 There's simply no good reason for a private citizen to have access to that many weapons of war, but it should not come as a surprise.

Nevada has some of the weakest gun control laws in the United States. There are no limits on the number of guns an individual can own, and assault weapons are legal in the state as long as they are registered.5 The combination of weak state and federal gun laws made such a horrific attack possible.

There's one reason why Congress consistently fails to take real action on gun violence: the National Rifle Association. The NRA has a chokehold on Congress that keeps most bills about gun control from even coming to the floor for a vote. Politicians beholden to – or afraid of – the NRA are willing to turn their backs on their constituents when it comes time to implement reasonable limits and controls on guns. But you can count on them for a "heartbroken" tweet about their "thoughts and prayers" when a tragic shooting makes the national news.

Finally breaking the NRA's chokehold on Congress will require massive grassroots pressure on our elected officials, demanding that they deliver more than thoughts and prayers in the face of our epidemic of gun violence.

My blood is boiling

Greenpeace

Kathleen -

"I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you are throwing our budget out of whack."

Trump actually said this yesterday when visiting Puerto Rico. He then went on to imply that Hurricane Maria was not a "real" catastrophe for the island while he continues to under resource relief efforts.1

Let that sink in. This is not how you treat people whose lives have been devastated by climate change.

My blood is boiling but I'm committed to turning my anger at Trump's disdain and dismissal into action. That's why Annie's message below is so important. I promise to never let Trump, other climate denying politicians, and fossil fuel corporations off the hook for human suffering fueled by climate pollution.

Will you help me hold fossil fuel corporations, Trump, and climate denying politicians accountable by donating to Greenpeace right now and supporting all of our campaigns to protect people and planet?

Thanks for all you do,

Kelly Mitchell
Climate Campaign Director, Greenpeace USA

Kathleen -

We must hold fossil fuel corporations and climate-denying politicians accountable right now!

Take Action!

Give genourously today to hold the line on climate change-fueled extreme weather and to support all of Greenpeace's work.

Take action

The whole country looks on as survivors in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, Dominica, and the U.S. Virgin Islands piece their lives back together after this month's extreme weather events. At a time of great anxiety, we can find solace in communities coming together — friends and strangers helping one another repair their homes and remove debris, sharing generators and food, collecting and distributing funds and supplies to those who need them. I'm so proud that Greenpeace's supporters have been a part of that — your generosity is staggering.

Greenpeace supporters also know that we can't count on those who fueled these problems to correct them. The people hit hardest by these extreme weather events are focused on restoring their homes and livelihoods — so they'll need to rely on the rest of us to hold the right people accountable.

Can I count on you to make an urgent gift to help us do just that and support all our work to protect the environment?

As we do all we can to support families and communities that are rebuilding, we must take on the additional work of demanding that fossil fuel corporations and climate science-denying politicians pay for the disasters made worse by undermining climate action. With their obscene profit margins and campaign war chests, it is unconscionable that they would refuse to protect our people and our planet from rising seas and stronger storms. We must force the issue.

Donate right now to stand together, hold the line against the corporations and climate change deniers who got us into this devastating situation, and support all our important campaigns. Let's do all we can, and stretch as far as we can, to stand up for victims of extreme weather until they have the strength to rejoin us.

Yours in solidarity,

Annie Leonard
Executive Director, Greenpeace USA

P.S. While communities rebuild we must hold fossil fuel corporations and climate science-denying politicians accountable for stronger Hurricanes. Give generously right now to support all of Greenpeace's important work!

Greenpeace never takes a dime from corporations or governments. Everything we do is thanks to the generous support of people like you!

Trump attacks Puerto Rico

Tell Congress: Help Puerto Rico, not Wall Street

Petition to Congress:
"Immediately pass a major Puerto Rico relief package, including billions in direct aid and grants, not loans and cover the reconstruction of the island's electric grid and infrastructure. Restore control of Puerto Rico's budget and spending to the island's elected officials by eliminating the Financial Oversight and Management Board, and forgive Puerto Rico's Washington-manufactured debts so the island can make a lasting recovery."

Dear Katy,

Tell Congress: Help Puerto Rico, not Wall Street

More than a week after Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico, millions of American citizens there are still without electricity and reliable access to basic necessities like food and water.1

The quick and overwhelming response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma has been utterly missing in Puerto Rico. Instead, the Trump administration took a week to waive shipping restrictions, causing massive delays in aid efforts even as the elderly were dying due to the lack of medicine or electricity for ventilators and dialysis.2

Instead of springing into action, Donald Trump has tweeted that Puerto Ricans "want everything to be done for them," accused San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz of criticizing the disaster response only because Democrats put her up to it insisted that Wall Street be able to profit off loans to Puerto Rico and told Puerto Ricans while in Puerto Rico that the disaster wasn't a "real catastrophe" like Katrina.3,4,5

After decades of exploiting Puerto Rico to help Wall Street, our government is now ignoring American citizens in desperate need. So we are standing with our friends at Democracy for America to demand that Congress act immediately to provide a massive aid package and end Wall Street's hedge fund exploitation of Puerto Rico.

Tell Congress: Help Puerto Rico, not Wall Street. Click here to sign the petition.

After the Trump administration labelled the disaster response a "good-news story," Mayor Cruz declared "this is a 'people are dying' story."6 Once again, Trump flew off the handle when a person of color dared to criticize him. But while the mayor was sleeping on a cot and is doing all she can for her people, Trump was enjoying a day of golf.7 Only recently were there reports that Trump would request aid for Puerto Rico, with no guarantees that it will be enough or free the island from the hands of hedge funds.8

The crisis in Puerto Rico is decades in the making, and the result of a racist, colonial approach to the island. First, it was sugarcane industry exploitation. Then, Congress turned Puerto Rico into a tax haven for manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies. When Congress allowed those tax breaks to expire, the economy collapsed and the island plunged into debt.9

Wall Street hedge funds bought the debt and used that leverage to force Puerto Rico's government to slash infrastructure and the social safety net while paying them billions in interest and fees. Washington has since imposed an unelected, Wall Street-backed "fiscal control board" to institute harsh austerity measures.10 The hedge funds that bought up Puerto Rico's manufactured debt even pushed a new deal just days ago in an attempt to profit off of the disaster.11

Puerto Rico does not need more racist, colonial micromanaging. Congress must immediately pass a massive relief package like the ones for Irma and Harvey, end Wall Street control over the island, and forgive the island's debts.

Tell Congress: Help Puerto Rico, not Wall Street. Click here to sign the petition.

Puerto Ricans are American citizens – but have been treated like colonial possessions to be exploited by large corporations and then told they cannot manage their own affairs. They had no voice in Congress when our government was boosting oil and gas companies, but now that climate change has supercharged storms and devastated the island, Trump has even floated the idea that Puerto Rico not be rebuilt at all.12

The rest of America has failed in our obligations to our sisters and brothers in Puerto Rico for far too long. Congress must not only pass a massive relief package, but tackle the underlying outrage by ending Wall Street control over the island and forgiving its Washington-created debt.

Signature needed: No chemical industry shills at the EPA

Reject chemical industry shill Michael Dourson to head EPA chemical safety office

The petition to the U.S. Senate reads:
"Reject the nomination of long time chemical industry ally Michael Dourson to head the EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention."

Add your name:

Dear Katy,

Michael Dourson may be the most dangerous Trump administration nominee you've never heard of.

Picked to oversee the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) chemical safety division, Dourson is a long time chemical industry shill who has deep ties to Dow, DuPont, Monsanto and the Koch brothers.

He has a long history of greenwashing the deadly effects of toxic chemicals to protect corporate profits and runs an industry-funded "science-for-hire" consulting firm charged with undercutting environmental regulations.1

A man bought and paid for by the chemical industry who has put the health and safety of American families at serious risk should not be in charge of overseeing chemical safety and pollution. We must immediately urge the Senate to reject Dourson's nomination before it comes up for a vote.

Tell the Senate: Reject Michael Dourson's nomination to head the EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. Click here to sign the petition.

For more than two decades, Dourson has been the go-to "voice of the chemical industry" when corporate polluters and chemical manufacturers need misleading research to minimize the effects of toxic chemicals.2 In the 1990s, tobacco giant Philip Morris hired Dourson's firm to generate research downplaying the negative effects of secondhand smoke. He justified his decision to work with Big Tobacco by saying "Jesus hung out with prostitutes and tax collectors. … Why should we exclude anyone that needs help?"3

Dourson has since made a career of shamelessly defending the chemical industry with shady science and questionable research.4 Multinational chemical manufacturers like Dow, Monsanto and DuPont have routinely hired him to downplay the effects of highly toxic substances found in pesticides and everyday products like cosmetics and shampoo that are linked to birth defects, developmental problems and cancer.5 A now-defunct website his firm built for the chemical industry once claimed that toxic chemicals in children's toys weren't so dangerous since water can be toxic, too, at a high enough volume.6

Tell the Senate: Reject Michael Dourson's nomination to head the EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. Click here to sign the petition.

Dourson's nomination is an extremely dangerous example of putting the fox in charge of guarding the henhouse. Dourson will likely work to roll back critical environmental and chemical safety regulations to benefit his friends in the chemical industry at the expense of the health and well-being of Americans across the country.

As Ken Cook, the head of the Environmental Working Group, put it, "Handing the keys to EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention to Dourson, who has spent a career opposing both, makes about as much sense as letting the CEO of Philip Morris run the American Lung Association."7

The Senate is set to hold hearings on Dourson's nomination any day now. We must sound the alarm now before the Trump administration quietly installs another industry hack to undermine the EPA and put public health and lives at risk.

Tell the Senate: Do not confirm Trump's FCC chairman

The petition to the U.S. Senate reads:
"Block and resist the confirmation of former telecom attorney Ajit Pai – an extreme right-wing corporate lawyer – as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission."

Add your name:

Dear Katy,

Unacceptable

Donald Trump would not have risen to power without extreme right-wing media outlets selling him to the public – and the Trump resistance wouldn't be possible without activists fighting back online.

So it is no wonder that Trump's pick for chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is trying to expand right-wing control of the media and simultaneously shut down the open internet.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is an extreme right-wing corporate lawyer who wants to kill net neutrality and approve a television mega-empire that would rival Fox News as a source of right-wing propaganda. But before Pai can start his second term, the Senate must re-confirm him for the job, which gives us a crucial opportunity to fight back and resist Pai's anti-internet, anti-consumer agenda.

Tell the Senate: Fire Ajit Pai. Click here to sign the petition.

Net neutrality is the rule that prevents internet providers like Comcast and AT&T from charging you more to access content they don't like, or even censoring it altogether. Even though net neutrality is wildly popular, Pai wants to repeal net neutrality rules and hand control of the internet to the biggest corporations.1

Without net neutrality, internet providers could make it harder for activists to organize online if they don't like their views. They could create "slow lanes" and "fast lanes" for different content, making it hard for anyone except the biggest companies to reach internet users. If Pai succeeds in reversing net neutrality, the open internet as we know it could disappear.

Tell the Senate: Fire Ajit Pai. Click here to sign the petition.

Meanwhile, Pai is opening the door for the largest broadcasting company in the United States to get even bigger. The right-wing television conglomerate Sinclair wants to buy out its competitor Tribune Media. The new mega-corporation would reach 72 percent of of American households – far more than the legal cap that limits broadcasters to reaching no more than 39 percent of homes.2 But Pai is reviving an outdated loophole in the rules to let the merger go through.3

Sinclair is famous for sending stations daily "must-run" segments that push its extremist right-wing views. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Sinclair required local television stations to air stories critical of Hillary Clinton.4 Jared Kushner even announced that the Trump campaign had "struck a deal" with Sinclair to ensure more favorable coverage of Trump.5 Now, Sinclair has hired former Trump aide Boris Epshteyn and requires stations to air his commentary nine times a week.6

If Pai is successful, his radical pro-corporate agenda could reshape our media landscape and eliminate the open internet. But because his position as FCC chair is appointed and not elected, the only way we can stop him is to demand that our elected U.S. senators block his confirmation.
