Golden State reject Trump’s hate (sign this)

CREDO action
No Warriors at the White House: Golden State must reject Trump's hate

The petition to the Golden State Warriors reads:
"I urge every member of the Golden State Warriors team to publicly reject Trump's hate by refusing to set foot in his White House."

Add your name:

Dear Katy,

Curry, Iguodala and Livingston. Three Golden State Warriors have publicly announced that they would turn down an invitation to Trump's White House since we launched our campaign. Our activism is working. Now, it's time to turn up the heat.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who has voiced his opposition to Trump's hateful administration time and time again, just told ESPN Radio that he thinks the team should accept an invitation to the White House out of "respect for the office" Trump holds.1 He even mentioned our petition in the interview. If the Warriors want to show their respect for the institution of the presidency, they should refuse to set foot in the White House while a racist bigot occupies the oval office.

More than 80,000 CREDO members have already signed our petition urging the Warriors to stay away from Trump's White House. The campaign has generated massive media coverage, with stories in prominent national and local outlets like ESPN, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, The Mercury News, and Vibe.2,3,4,5,6

We have the momentum, but our work is not done. With Coach Kerr backpedaling and reluctant to put his words into action, we must ramp-up the pressure even more.

Tell the Golden State Warriors: Not one NBA champion at Trump's White House. Click here to sign the petition.

After Election Day, Kerr was outspoken about Trump's hateful agenda, condemning his unconstitutional Muslim ban and describing Trump as a "blowhard" who is "ill-suited" to lead the country.7,8 Now, he sounds more like NBA Commissioner Adam Silver who called potential player boycotts of Trump's White House "lost opportunities." Kerr recently said that the Warriors should meet with Trump as a "good gesture," and use the visit as an opportunity to voice their concerns.9

If the past few months have taught us anything, it is that legitimizing and normalizing Trump and his racist, sexist and xenophobic administration will get us nowhere and cause more harm to the communities Trump threatens.

The Warriors represent California, also known as the Golden State, which has been the epicenter of resistance to Trump's hateful regime since day one. Oakland, the Warriors hometown, is a city some of the fiercest activists of the progressive movement call home. There is no way the Warriors should grant any respect to a bigot who is trying to end health care access and civil rights protections for immigrants, women, LGBTQ people and people of color in their state and hometown.

Some Warriors have already spoken out against Trump. The team's power forward David West said that Trump's election win was "disheartening" and "disappointing."10 Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry called Trump an "ass" earlier this year and said he would turn down an invitation to the White House.11 Small forward Andre Iguodala and shooting guard Shaun Livingston also have no intention of going.12,13 Both have said they strongly disagree with Trump's administration, and Iguodala believes that racism across the country has gotten worse since Trump took office.

During the 2014 NBA playoffs, the Golden State Warriors wore black socks, their warmup jerseys backwards and threatened to walk out of a game if Commissioner Adam Silver did not use the full extent of his power to punish former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for his anti-Black racism.14 Thanks to pressure from the Warriors and other NBA teams, Commissioner Silver levied a $2.5 million fine on Donald Sterling and banned him from the league indefinitely. We need the Warriors to stand up against Trump's racist regime with the same uncompromising resistance now.

Tell the Golden State Warriors: Not one NBA champion at Trump's White House. Click here to sign the petition.

Coach Kerr and every single player on the Warriors team knows that there is strength in numbers. If we want to protect women, immigrants, LGBTQ people and people of color from Trump's hate, we must stick together, stand up, speak out and do everything we can to resist his agenda.

A few months ago, 33 members of the 2017 Super Bowl championship team, the New England Patriots, refused to legitimize Trump's presidency and boycotted the team's visit to the White House.15 Not a single team member signed Trump's honorary game helmet. That was a good first step. Now, Golden State can take it all the way by making sure the entire team stands united against Trump's bigotry and racism, and stays away from the White House.

There is no doubt that the Warriors' Bay Area fan base will have their backs if they stand up to Trump's hate. Add your name now to show the Golden State Warriors that we are counting on them to send racist bigot Donald Trump a powerful message of resistance by rejecting his invitation to the White House. Signature needed: Trump’s voter suppression is ramping up

CREDO action
No collaboration with Trump's voter suppression commission

Tell governors and state election officials:
"Defend the privacy of your state's voters and the integrity of our democracy. Refuse to release any of your state's voter data to Donald Trump's Presidential Commission on Election Integrity."

Add your name:

Sign the petition ►

Dear Katy,

Fight voter suppression

Donald Trump's voter suppression commission is "laying the groundwork for voter suppression, plain & simple."1 The commission has not even had its first meeting but its vice chair – one of the worst perpetrators of voter suppression in the country, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach – just made a dangerous, unprecedented demand to state election officials: give me your voter rolls, now.2

Election integrity advocates immediately raised alarms about Kobach's massive data request. Our friends at the Brennan Center said the request could be used to "justify regressive and disenfranchising federal law." Other experts highlighted that the commission's plan to make all the data public poses a dangerous privacy risk.3

State election officials are under no obligation to provide the data Kobach is demanding. Officials from 14 states have already indicated they will not comply in any way with the commission's demand. Officials in every state should wholly reject the request and refuse to provide even one piece of data to Kobach and his right-wing voter suppression commission.

Tell governors and state election officials: Defend our democracy. Refuse to share your state's voter data with Trump's voter suppression commission. Click here to sign the petition.

Trump and extremist right-wing Republicans relentlessly perpetuate the myth of voter fraud to cast doubt on the electoral process, reinforce racism, undermine the voting power of communities of color and justify laws that suppress the vote. Trump's commission is designed to legitimize the voter fraud myth and supercharge suppression efforts at the national level.

The scale of private data that Kobach requested is staggering. He requested:

the full first and last names of all registrants, middle names or initials if available, addresses, dates of birth, political party (if recorded in your state), last four digits of social security number if available, voter history (elections voted in) from 2006 onward, active/inactive status, cancelled status, information regarding any felony convictions, information regarding voter registration in another state, information regarding military status, and overseas citizen information.4

Voting rights advocates worry that Kobach is trying to use the data to expand his reckless and discriminatory Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck program. Crosscheck is supposed to prevent double voting, but it encourages and enables voter purges. The system kicks two hundred eligible voters, often young people and African-American, Latinx and Asian-American voters, off the rolls for every double vote it finds.5,6 Only 32 states participate in Crosscheck now. Having 50 states' data would allow Kobach to purge voters nationwide. No state should help him do that.

Tell governors and state election officials: Refuse to share your state's voter data with Trump's voter suppression commission. Click here to sign the petition

Trump has stacked his commission with people infamous for their efforts to suppress the vote, including Mike Pence, Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.7,8,9 The day after Kobach sent his letter to the states, Trump added Hans von Spakovsky, who politicized and gutted the Department of Justice's voter protection work during the George W. Bush administration, to the commission.10

As of yesterday, Democratic and Republican officials in 14 states from California to Mississippi have said they will refuse to comply with the commission's data request.11-15 California Secretary of State Alex Padilla has said he will not share anything with the commission because "participation would only serve to legitimize [Trump, Pence and Kobach's] false and already debunked claims of massive voter fraud."16 Officials in 23 states have said they will share limited data that is part of the public record.17 Thirteen states are undecided.18 They all need to follow California's lead and refuse to enable or legitimize Trump's attempts to steal the vote.

No state should collaborate in any way with Trump's voter suppression commission. Click the link below to tell governors and state election officials to refuse to let any of their state's voter data be used to undermine democracy:

Sign the petition: Support single-payer health care

CREDO action
It is time for Democrats to fight back. We need Medicare for All.

The petition to congressional Democrats reads:
"It is time for Democrats to go on the offensive and take bold, decisive steps toward a health care system that puts people over profits. The majority of the country supports single-payer health care. Join Sens. Sanders, Merkley and Warren and Rep. Conyers to support legislation that would make Medicare available to all Americans."

Dear Katy,

Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have delayed their Trumpcare push thanks to the massive grassroots pressure that you helped build.1 Now is the time for Democrats to go on the offensive with a real solution to our health care crisis that provides universal health care for all.

The last few months have made it more than clear that right-wing Republican extremists are going to be relentless in their attempts to steal health care from millions of people in order to give tax breaks to millionaires. Every version of their cruel and immoral Trumpcare bill threw women, low-income children, families and seniors under the bus.2 Republicans are already revising their deadly bill, and there is no doubt that they will try to ram it through again.

To fight back, Democrats cannot just resist Trumpcare. They must unite behind a bold and clear alternative like Medicare for All, also known as "single-payer" health care. Early this year, Rep. John Conyers introduced a Medicare for All bill in the House. And recently, progressive champions Sens. Bernie Sanders, Jeff Merkley and Elizabeth Warren called on Democrats to push for a national single-payer health care system.3,4 Now, we must show just how many Americans support this simple and commonsense alternative. Help us build momentum now so Democrats know exactly what we expect them to do.

Tell Democrats: It is time to fight back. We need Medicare for All. Click here to sign the petition

Massive grassroots support for Medicare for All would shine an even harsher light on Republicans and their cruel, heartless bill. Unfortunately, Democrats are divided when it comes to a national single-payer system. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer have so far dodged discussions about making Medicare available to all Americans. Recently, Leader Pelosi encouraged supporters of single-payer to focus on state options instead.5 In contrast, while McConnell was trying to ram Trumpcare through the Senate, Sen. Warren was out barnstorming in her home state urging Democrats to embrace single-payer.6 Progressives know that we could solve today's health care crisis by expanding a program that is already up and running – and working.

It is important to be clear: The problems with health care in America are not because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). American health care costs so much and heals so little in part because predatory insurance companies and Big Pharma stand between people and their doctors and use monopoly power to rob us blind. The ACA made modest but still life-changing reforms that we should defend against Republican attacks. Millions of people have already been helped – people with pre-existing conditions, young adults who get to stay on their parents' plan, beneficiaries of the Medicaid expansion and those who would have faced lifetime caps on coverage.

Now we need to expand the ACA's reforms. Medicare for All would leave the medical system in place, but replace the for-profit insurance companies that drive up costs without making us any healthier. So it's no wonder that most Americans – including 41 percent of Republicans – support Medicare for All.7 We need to put pressure on Democrats to be bold and put Republicans on the record opposing a single-payer health care plan with broad support.

Tell Democrats: It is time to fight back. We need Medicare for All. Click here to sign the petition

Medicare already covers 40 million Americans over the age of 65, providing quality care at prices that are much lower than the private market. If we start by lowering the Medicare eligibility age, it will provide competition to bloated predatory insurance companies and bring us closer to the day when people are covered from birth.

Medicare and Medicaid are our nation's most effective and efficient health care programs, but right-wing Republicans have long had their sights set on dismantling our social safety net. Their ultimate goal has been to end Medicare as we know it and cause skyrocketing premiums and loss of coverage for nearly 57 million of us. We cannot fight back with half-hearted, corporate solutions. We need to show the millions of Americans who love Medicare that progressives have an alternative vision to make it available to all.

If we want want to make health care for all a reality for the entire country, we must make sure Democrats take decisive steps toward a national health care system that puts people over profits. Now is the time for Democrats to put the full weight of their caucus behind Medicare for All.

Tell Democrats: It is time to fight back. We need Medicare for All. Click the link below to sign the petition.

Sign the petition: Do not allow “torture memo” author back in government

CREDO action
Tell the Senate: Torture memo author Steven Bradbury has no place in government

Petition to the U.S. Senate:
"An enabler of George W. Bush's torture program has no place in the federal government. Block and resist Trump's nomination of torture memo author Steven Bradbury."

Add your name:

Dear Katy,

For those who thought Trump's nominees could not be any worse, Trump's latest pick represents a disturbing new low. Trump has nominated Bush-era torture policy architect Steven Bradbury as general counsel for the Department of Transportation.

While serving as the lead attorney for George W. Bush's Department of Justice, Bradbury wrote three secret opinions on the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" – also known as the "torture memos."1 Thanks in large part to his work, the CIA retained authority to torture prisoners up until President Obama shut down the program in 2009.

The CIA is not above the law, and neither is Donald Trump. Trump may want to hire lawyers who are willing defend limitless powers for the executive branch, but Bradbury's justification of torture shows exactly why such power is so dangerous.

Tell the Senate: Block and resist Trump's nomination of torture policy architect Steven Bradbury. Click here to sign the petition.

During his time in the Bush administration, Steven Bradbury gave the legal thumbs-up to a harrowing list of torture methods – waterboarding, nudity, striking prisoners, exposure to extreme temperatures, dousing with cold water, sleep deprivation for more than seven days, cramped conditions and using these tactics in combination.2 While the military has a longstanding prohibition on torture, Bradbury concluded its policies didn't apply to the CIA.3 His decisions were later overturned, and the Department of Justice's ethics office would later issue a report citing "serious concerns about some of his analysis."4

Trump might think the public won't notice if he sneaks Bradbury into an agency mostly unrelated to his prior work. But this attempt to rehabilitate Bradbury and allow him back into public service is not acceptable. No one who promotes and defends torture is qualified to work in our government.

In fact, Bradbury's 2008 nomination to serve as the head of the Office of Legal Counsel was blocked by senators because of concerns with his role in torture and surveillance and whether he could be sufficiently independent of the White House.5 The Senate needs to use their confirmation power again to make sure torture promoter Steven Bradbury is never in a position of government power again.

Tell the Senate: Block and resist Trump's nomination of torture policy architect Steven Bradbury. Click here to sign the petition.

The opposition to Bradbury's nomination is growing. During a Senate committee interview of Bradbury, a number of senators voiced their opposition to a candidate willing to "rubber-stamp" the abuse of power,6 and Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a veteran, placed a formal hold on his confirmation.7 Veterans and peace activists were arrested protesting Bradbury at the hearing.8

To be confirmed, Bradbury needs the approval of both the Senate Commerce Committee and the full Senate. To stop that from happening we need more senators to join Sen. Duckworth in doing everything they can to block and resist his confirmation.
