House Republicans are attempting to hold this country hostage
|
| Kathleen, | President Biden caved to the threats by GOP House extremists — and the resulting backroom deal is not pretty. Titled the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the debt ceiling deal contains multiple "poison pills." It hurts already struggling families and expands upon the attacks on environmental protections that we saw in the Dirty Deal. This polluters' wishlist will harm historically underserved communities and create more and more sacrifice zones. The resulting emissions will thwart any chances of meeting the United States' climate action goals. This is where you come in. Representatives in the House need to know that the far right's attempts to railroad America in exchange for a debt ceiling deal will not be tolerated. Can you take 30 seconds to send a message to your Representative urging them to vote for a clean debt bill, and reject the fossil fuel industry's dream come true? In addition to fast-tracking oil and gas projects like the Mountain Valley Pipeline, the Fiscal Responsibility Act would roll back key aspects of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Gutting this bedrock environmental law does nothing to advance clean energy development. Far worse, it will turn historically underserved and frontline environmental justice communities into sacrifice zones. The climate and environmental justice movements came together and defeated the fossil fuel industry-friendly Dirty Deal three times before. Now, President Biden and House Republicans are attempting to revive these harmful attacks for a fourth time. Together, we can defeat it again. The House vote on the Fiscal Responsibility Act is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31. The time to act is NOW — send a message to House Representatives urging them to pass a clean debt ceiling deal and reject weakening environmental protections to favor polluters. | | Republicans are using the debt ceiling negotiations to hold this country hostage in order to extract fossil fuels and profits from our communities. By messaging your representatives, you'll be joining the hundreds of environmental justice organizations, frontline communities, and the more than 80 House members led by House Natural Resources Committee member Rep. Raúl Grijalva who believe that these harmful provisions have no place in debt ceiling negotiations. The House vote on the Fiscal Accountability Act offers a prime window to stand up to Big Oil and the extremists of the House Republican caucus. Help us put people ahead of profits and defeat the Dirty Deal once again. But stay tuned, this fight is far from over. You can venture into the battle on the side of climate and environmental justice by sending a message to your representative today.
