Kathleen- Corporate plastic pollution is strangling Planet Earth — we need millions of people fighting to change it! Can you believe it happened again so soon? Another whale — a pregnant sperm whale found in Italy — just washed to shore with 49 pounds of plastic in her stomach. It's immoral. As ocean wildlife and communities everywhere face this waste crisis, corporations like Nestlé are increasing the amount of plastic packaging they produce by millions of pounds each year! We urgently need to ratchet up our campaign demanding real change from the brands that force seemingly endless amounts of plastic on us — brands like Nestlé, Unilever, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo., Colgate, Danone, Johnson & Johnson, and Mars. To do it — while strengthening all of our work — we need to raise $380,000 by April 30. Are you in? You've already accomplished so much in the last month. Because of you, more than 3 million people like you have signed on to demand change from corporate plastic polluters:
But we can't stop. Our movement has created such a tidal wave of change that the plastic and chemical industries are fighting back. Some are trying to distract you with spin and unambitious recycling efforts. Others are even trying to pass preemption laws to prohibit local municipalities from banning single-use plastics. We have to show them our movement won't be stopped. That's why we need your help to reach our goal of $380,000 by April 30th to power our movement to #BreakFreeFromPlastic and everything we do for the environment. Change is happening. After a persistent Greenpeace campaign of call-ins and petitions and actions at its headquarters, Trader Joe's announced it would eliminate 1 million pounds of plastic from its stores this year. This shows that sustained pressure by people like you does work! And we often find out, in our meetings with corporate executives, they usually do have a Plan B to move away from single-use plastic. Major corporations don't like being caught off guard; they see a movement against throwaway plastic and have drafted plans for a transition. But corporations also like to stick with what already works — they're hoping that the opposition to plastic will just blow over (kind of like their plastic packaging on our shores). We've got to let them know that this isn't going to fade, we are a movement radically rethinking and changing our throwaway culture. We're in it for the long haul and we want to see not just new sustainable packaging (we don't want to swap one throwaway for another) but new models of delivering goods starting with refill and reuse. If we continue to escalate our campaign we can completely transform brands and break free from plastic. Imagine what that would look like for the world. For the Earth, Annie Leonard, P.S. Whale killing plastic pollution is not inevitable. Help us raise $380,000 by April 30 to stop the pollution crisis and power up all our work for the environment. Greenpeace never takes a dime from corporations or governments. Everything we do is thanks to the generous support of people like you!
