Dear Katy, The Democratic Party needs bold moral leadership. That means we need our 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to defend our democracy and support impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump. Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Julián Castro have already come out in support of Trump's impeachment – and other candidates have acknowledged Trump's illegal behavior while stopping short of calling for impeachment. Now, we need all 18 candidates to lead on the issue.1, 2 We need our Democratic leaders to lead boldly out of moral conscience, not political cowardice. We need every candidate running for president to uphold our nation of laws and hold Trump accountable for trashing our Constitution and attempting to obstruct justice. Only the House of Representatives can move forward with impeachment but Democratic leaders are avoiding taking a bold stance on the issue. That's why we need presidential hopefuls to lead the party and take a clear stance on what they think the House ought to do. If there is overwhelming political and public pressure, we will remove Trump from office. Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Julián Castro have already come out in support of Trump's impeachment, but we need all 18 candidates to come out in support.1 Will you add your name in support? After reading it from cover to cover, Sen. Elizabeth Warren quickly took to Twitter: "The severity of this misconduct demands that elected officials in both parties set aside political considerations and do their constitutional duty," she said. "That means the House should initiate impeachment proceedings against the President of the United States." Castro and Harris have since followed suit and announced their support for impeachment. Unfortunately, other 2020 Democrats have not done the same.3 Major candidates, like Bernie Sanders and Robert O' Rourke, have taken stances against impeachment while others remain noncommittal. After sidestepping the explosive issue of impeachment for months by citing the inquiry by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, most of the other 15 Democratic presidential candidates have responded to the special counsel's report with tentative remarks about impeaching Trump, demands for the unredacted Mueller findings, calls for further hearings or attempts to simply change the subject. Regardless of whom you support for president or if you are still undecided, calling for impeachment will demonstrate the kind of leadership needed from anyone who will try to dig the country out of the Trump nightmare. It will also put pressure on House leaders like Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, who have failed to stand alongside the progressive women of color in Congress – notably Rep. Rashida Tlaib – who are leading the charge for impeachment. What Democrats do at this moment will speak volumes about their commitment to our democracy and to the communities Trump threatens every day. We need to raise the stakes to make sure the 2020 Democrats put the good of the American people and the future of our democracy ahead of political maneuvering. But we already knew Trump was entirely unfit for office and has repeatedly acted with a disqualifying contempt for the rule of law. Whether it's attempting to ban an entire religion from the United States, firing a law enforcement official investigating his campaign or personally ordering his lawyer to lie to the American people about an extramarital affair, there is more than enough evidence for Democrats to move forward with impeachment against Trump. Only Congress has the constitutional authority to hold Trump accountable and defend our democracy. It tried to outsource its power to Mueller, then Mueller put the responsibility back in the hands of House Democrats. It's time for the 2020 Democrats to use their influence to make sure the party they want to lead acts boldly. Tell the 2020 Democrats: Pressure the House to begin impeachment investigations.
