| | | Hi, Kathleen — Shailene Woodley here. | World Oceans Day is today, which means it's time for us to stand together to save our seas. | While corporations claim they're trying to lower their plastic use, they're clearly unwilling to make any real steps toward stopping the crisis facing our oceans and coastal communities — because they'll never put people or the planet over their profit margins. That's why I'm so proud to join the strongest, boldest, most relentless global network raising awareness about the threats to our oceans, and unapologetically demanding that world leaders act now to protect our oceans and our communities from plastic pollution. | That global network is Greenpeace — and this World Oceans Day, Kathleen, I'm counting on you to sail with us. Will you donate $10 (or as much as you can) toward our $50,000 goal? | | I've seen the realities of ocean pollution firsthand — and trust me, it's bad: | - The equivalent of one garbage truck-load of plastic enters the oceans every minute;
- There's enough plastics in our oceans to circle the planet more than 400 times over;
- And the problem isn't limited to big chunks of plastic, discarded fishing lines or flimsy shopping bags — it's the microplastics, too small to be seen by the naked eye.
| But I don't think sharing raw statistics does the actual scale of this problem justice. Not too long ago, I set sail with Greenpeace to the middle of the Atlantic. I dove in — and when I did, I was surrounded by hundreds of tiny pieces of plastic. | That's how bad it is. And after holding the evidence in my hand, I understand why we need to act now so future generations aren't stuck cleaning up our mess. We need corporations to stop downplaying the problem, and start innovating new consumer products. We need our politicians to stop dragging their feet and pass regulations to reduce plastic production. | The only way it happens is by making sure they know how much it matters to us — so we need to start making noise so loud that we can't be ignored any longer. | I'm adding my voice to Greenpeace USA's collective call on world leaders to start putting these ambitions into action. But the only way we'll keep speaking truth to power over corporate greenwashers is with support from grassroots Greenpeacers like you, Kathleen. Please, will you power all of Greenpeace USA's crucial work and the fight for our oceans' (and our own) plastic-free future by donating $10, or anything you can by the World Oceans Day deadline at midnight this Saturday? | | Your support, no matter how great or small, will make a lasting difference. | Thanks for reading, and happy World Oceans Day, Shailene Woodley Actor, oceans advocate and fellow Greenpeacer | | | | | | |
