Because fossil fuel megacorporations like ExxonMobil have been waging a deliberate disinformation campaign for decades. Like Big Tobacco before them, coal, oil, and gas companies have spent millions of dollars to create the false impression that there is debate among scientists. At Greenpeace, we are working to get the truth out there, to expose the climate-change deniers for what they are: Big Oil-financed liars. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that the world must greatly reduce its carbon dioxide emissions in the next 11 years or it will be too late. You may not realize just how despicable these hack "scientists" are, so let me tell you about one of them: Dr. Willie Soon. Dr. Soon has published a number of papers that claim to "debunk" climate science. He frequently appears on right-wing radio and television shows and has even testified in front of Congress. Documents obtained by Greenpeace revealed that Dr. Soon has received more than $1.3 million from the fossil fuel industry over the years.1 Dr. Soon referred to his research papers and Congressional testimony as "deliverables" that he provided to his clients, and in many cases did not disclose his funding sources in his published articles. Big Oil-sponsored "scientists" testifying in front of Big Oil-sponsored politicians, reading from Big Oil's script and saying that climate change is nothing to worry about. We have to expose this for what it is — a deadly con game. Please invest in the future of the planet by funding Greenpeace's critical work.
