Dear Katy, BuzzFeed News just reported that Donald Trump allegedly directed his long-time attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress.1 Telling someone to lie to Congress is a federal crime, plain and simple. This week even William Barr, Trump's own attorney general pick, affirmed under oath that, "if a president knowingly...suborns perjury... then he… commits the crime of obstruction."2 Trump thinks he is above the law and can commit impeachable offenses without consequence. Congress must prove him wrong. Republicans have consistently failed to hold Trump accountable, but now Democrats control the House of Representatives. They have mostly avoided talking about impeachment, but now is not the time for timidity or political calculations. These allegations are just the latest in a clear pattern of obstruction of justice, along with other clearly impeachable offenses. It is time for House Democrats to defend our democracy. During his presidential campaign, Trump allegedly told Cohen, who will soon be serving a three-year prison sentence for campaign fraud, to personally meet with President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a Trump Tower in Moscow and lie about those contacts to Congress to obscure Trump's Russia involvement.3 We owe much of what we know about Trump's obstruction of justice to the Mueller investigation, which CREDO and our members have been defending with everything we've got. But the investigation cannot be our only line of defense against Trump's threats to our democracy. Only Congress has the constitutional authority to hold Trump accountable, and no one at this moment has a more important role than House Democrats. We have to demand that they use the full scope of their investigatory and subpoena powers right now in parallel with Mueller's investigation and immediately begin impeachment proceedings. House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jerry Nadler tweeted this morning: "We know that the President has engaged in a long pattern of obstruction. Directing a subordinate to lie to Congress is a federal crime. The @HouseJudiciary Committee's job is to get to the bottom of it, and we will do that work."4 That's a good start, but we know House Democrats have been shy about impeachment until now. We need to show them there's massive support for impeachment, and remind them that we will have their backs if they lead boldly now but hold them accountable for their cowardice if they fail.
