| Dear Katy, Border Patrol agents are boarding Greyhound buses to racially profile and interrogate passengers about their immigration status at an alarming rate.1 These warrantless searches are not only terrifying for Greyhound customers, but also violate their civil liberties and Fourth Amendment rights. Greyhound has publicly condemned CBP's unconstitutional searches – but words are not enough. If the company cares about keeping its customers safe and sustaining its business, it needs to stop enabling Donald Trump's racist regime and bar immigration agents from inspecting its vehicles without probable cause or a warrant. Trump's war on immigrants is getting worse. Over the past few weeks, his administration introduced policies that would allow the government to imprison immigrant children and families indefinitely, punish and deport immigrants who access housing, health care and food assistance programs, and greenlight the construction of a southern border wall.2,3,4 We cannot sit by while companies like Greyhound enable Trump's hateful regime. Greyhound is allowing Border Patrol to racially profile, terrorize and violate the constitutional rights of its customers. In Indio, California, CBP agents pulled a Latino man off a Greyhound bus and held him for questioning because his shoes looked "suspicious," as if he had just crossed the border.5 In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, CBP officers seized a Jamaican woman on a Greyhound bus, questioned her without an attorney and threw her in jail.6 These searches are unconstitutional, and Greyhound has the power to stop them. As a private business, Greyhound has the Fourth Amendment right to deny CBP consent to board its buses without a warrant, but the company is refusing to exercise that right. Until it makes this simple declaration, Greyhound's claims of not supporting these searches and doing everything it can to keep its passengers safe can't be taken seriously.7 Speak out now to demand that Greyhound stop collaborating with immigration agents and protect its customers from warrantless searches.
