CP2 is a behemoth of a project, unlike any LNG terminal in the United States. Backed by Venture Global, the 10 billion dollar terminal located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, could pose serious potential risks to public health for those residing in Cancer Alley. With the potential to export up to 20 million tons of natural gas annually, CP2 could lock in decades of harmful greenhouse gas emissions at a time when scientists warn we must rapidly decarbonize. The potential pause of CP2's approval process would likely also mean a pause on 16 other LNG export terminals until after the U.S. presidential election in November. A huge deal. The movement for climate justice in the United States knows that this moment could be the litmus test determining how much new LNG comes online in the coming years. The Biden administration's directive to take climate impacts into consideration during the approval process could forever change the way new fossil fuel projects are assessed. I want to be clear: if President Biden instructs the DOE to pause the approval process for CP2 based on climate grounds, this would be a massive win for frontline communities in the Gulf and the movement for climate justice — but it's not the end of the fight. Climate voters have been urging the President to take meaningful action, and he is ready to respond. Can you take 30 seconds to send an urgent message to President Biden and DOE Secretary Granholm urging them to officially pause approvals for all new LNG export projects including Venture Global's CP2? This is just the first step. Getting President Biden to commit to a pause on new LNG export permits would be a promising sign. The next step is to keep the pressure on to ensure the pause turns into a permanent ban on such polluting projects. At stake is a climate-safe future, one in which the public is shielded from the harmful effects of fossil fuel infrastructure, clean air and clean water are top priorities, and in which our electeds make the necessary decisions to stem further greenhouse gas emissions. Hurry, President Biden and DOE Secretary Granholm need to hear from you today! Take 30 seconds to send them a message. |
