| | | Kathleen, I wanted to make sure you heard this HUGE news: | The Biden administration has officially announced a pause on the approval process for all new liquefied natural gas terminals including Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2), a carbon bomb currently slated for construction on Louisiana's Gulf Coast, to assess its climate impacts. | The Biden administration's announcement of a pause on pending decisions on exports of LNG to non-Free Trade Agreement countries is a MAJOR win for our movement to protect people and the planet. It is the result of tireless organizing and campaigning by Frontline communities in the Gulf and across the United States. | Here's why: Proposed LNG export terminals like Venture Global's CP2 could pose serious risks to public health while catapulting domestic greenhouse gas production to new highs. The $10 BILLION CP2 is a behemoth of a project, infamously known as the "Climate Death Star." Experts believe upwards of 16 other proposed LNG terminals would be delayed and on the chopping block as a result of this announcement. With the potential to export up to 20 million tons of natural gas annually, proposed LNG export terminal projects like CP2 could lock in decades of harmful greenhouse gas emissions at a time when scientists are pleading with corporations and governments to heed the warning: we must rapidly decarbonize. | Greenpeace USA has been working tirelessly to combat efforts by LNG corporations to ramp up U.S. exports of climate-wrecking liquefied natural gas and to oppose Venture Global's CP2 project. This news out of the Biden administration is one step in the right direction to transition away from fossil fuels. This is a HUGE win for our network of activists. | The next step is to keep the pressure on to ensure the pause turns into a permanent ban on such polluting projects. | But if we want to protect the environment and safeguard public health, we need to keep up the momentum. It's YOUR support that makes critical moments like this MAJOR win possible. So please, will you chip in $10 or whatever you can to fund our movement so we can pressure our politicians to make this pause permanent? | | Thank you for being on our side, John Noel Sr. Climate Campaigner, Greenpeace USA | | | | | | |
