Kathleen,
Earlier today, on the iconic Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, we were reminded just how people-power can help make history! Thanks to the unwavering support of you and over five million others, world leaders finally took action and together we celebrated the first-ever Global Ocean Treaty. But this doesn't mean our journey is over.
Every day the threats facing our oceans are mounting. This major new report highlights just how much human pressures on our oceans have increased over the past five years. From industrial fishing and pollution, to the looming threat of deep sea mining – fragile ocean ecosystems can no longer withstand the strain.

But there is a solution: scientists agree that covering our oceans in a network of sanctuaries can protect and heal them. These areas, off-limits to destructive activities like industrial fishing, drilling and mining, provide space for marine life and ecosystems to recover and thrive.
Along with the report, we're sharing a new animated short film, to bring the story of ocean protection to life. Featuring the iconic voices of actor and activist Jane Fonda, actor Simon Pegg and singer-songwriter Camila Cabello, the film tells the story of three ocean friends who come face-to-face with the realities of ocean destruction. Will you watch and share our hand-drawn animated film, 'Sanctuary' to help spread the message that oceans deserve protection far and wide?

Our oceans are running out of time. If we want to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030, we need to protect over 4.2 million square miles of oceans per year. Governments are entering the next stretch in the race towards making ocean sanctuaries a reality at sea, and we're ready to keep up the pressure on leaders to maintain their ambition to safeguard our oceans. Failure is simply not an option.
Our oceans deserve a chance to bounce back. With your help and every ounce of energy we have we'll make sure that governments act swiftly to make this happen.
For our oceans,
John Hocevar, Oceans Campaign Director
Greenpeace USA
P.S - We're celebrating how far we've come this weekend in Long Beach, CA. If you're in the area, come join us for a free ship tour and bring your friends and family!
