Kathleen,
With record-breaking heat this summer, it's no secret that climate change is here — and we need healthy oceans to cool the climate. Governments around the world have recently taken crucial steps towards protecting 30% of the oceans by 2030 by means of a historic Global Ocean Treaty. Thanks to years of hard work and determination from people like you, we've gotten to this pivotal moment, but we still have to pressure the Biden administration to officially sign the treaty on September 20 — the first day governments are allowed to sign.
Tell President Biden to champion ocean solutions and ocean sanctuaries by signing the Global Oceans Treaty on Day 1!
Ocean sanctuaries create space for marine life to recover, thrive, and help cool the planet. We need to show up in a big way to support this crucial moment. This September, Southern California will be the site of Greenpeace's launch of a global expedition — exposing harms to the oceans caused by reckless exploitation and highlighting vital ecosystems that should be the first to be protected as ocean sanctuaries through the ratification of the Global Ocean Treaty.
Since our founding in 1971, the Greenpeace network has had a unique connection to our oceans, and we've spent the past 50 years protecting them. Will you join us once again to stand up for all marine life? Send a message to the Biden administration now and urge him to add the US to the growing list of countries ready to sign the treaty.
Greenpeace's fleet of ships provide a one-of-a-kind platform to conduct original science, launch disruptive actions, and bring attention to the most critical threats to the health of our oceans. We are so excited to bring the Arctic Sunrise to Southern California and show the world we're serious about protecting fragile ecosystems and marine life in order to save the planet and ourselves.
Time is ticking. This ambitious, dynamic, multifaceted campaign will elevate champion governments and allies, and truly kickstart the road to 30x30 — but we must act now. Tell the Biden Administration that the US must sign the Global Oceans Treaty as soon as possible!
For the oceans,
Arlo Hemphill
