Kathleen, We must keep up public pressure on stopping deep sea mining. Deep sea mining is an emerging destructive industy in which greedy corporations want to send monster machines down to the deep sea to rip up minerals from the ocean floor. We need to stop it before it starts! The international Seabed Authority conference is happening now — where world governments discuss whether to allow deep sea mining or not. They face a big question: how should they respond if the mining industry wants to start plundering the seabed this year? Right now, they have no idea. The good news is that countries like Palau, New Zealand, Fiji, Chile, France, Canada, and Brazil have already shown support for a moratorium on deep sea mining. And now the US has a clear opportunity to follow suit! Representative Ed Case of Hawaii's First District has introduced legislation — the American Seabed Protection Act and the International Seabed Protection Act — that will halt deep-seabed mining until the full consequences are understood and protective regulatory regimes are established — but these bills need our support to get off the ground and your voice is crucial. Act Now: Tell your Member of Congress to support this legislation and stop deep sea mining before it starts! The US needs to join the growing list of countries taking a stand against greedy, immoral mining companies that are willing to destroy the ocean floor for profit. There is too much at stake for our planet and frontline communities: - Deep sea mining risks causing harm to rare and unique deep sea ecosystems and the animals that call it home — like the ghost octopus and deep sea anglerfish.
- Deep sea mining could release carbon stored in deep sea sediments or disrupt the processes that store carbon.
- The ocean is life to Tangata o le Moana — the people of the Pacific. Deep sea mining could pose serious threats to Pacific peoples' livelihoods and spiritual connection to the ocean by impacting fish populations and sacred ecosystems.
Pacific people fight the daily impacts of colonization, and the ocean cannot be exploited yet again by corporations looking to profit off destroying the last untouched part of our planet. World leaders just agreed to a historic Global Ocean Treaty! We must use this growing momentum in the US to push against deep sea mining and hold our leadership accountable for ocean protection! Make your voice heard by sending a message to your Member of Congress now. For the deep sea, Arlo Hemphill, Stop Deep Sea Mining Project Lead |
