When we talk about plastic, most people think recycling is enough — but that couldn't be further from the truth.

| | | Hi Kathleen — Shailene here. | World Oceans Day is coming up, which means it's time for us to stand together to save our seas. It starts with an ambitious and legally binding Global Plastics Treaty — and fortunately, that's where Greenpeace USA comes in. | But as a 100% people-powered movement, we won't be able to keep up the fight for our oceans' survival without supporters like you. Please, Kathleen — will you join me in this critical moment to STOP plastic pollution with your gift of $10 in honor of World Oceans Day? | | When we talk about plastic, too many people think that just recycling is enough. Sadly, some don't know what "recycling" really means. | Here's the truth: most plastic will never be recycled, because it makes neither environmental nor economic sense to do so. For the very small portion of plastic that may be "recycled," it often means loading our plastic trash on barges and shipping it across the world — to Malaysia, India, Kenya, and other countries of the Global South — in which case, we're told that "it'll get taken care of." | Sadly, most plastic ends up in one of two places: either our oceans, or in poor communities left to suffer the aftermath — like contaminated water, exposure to deadly toxins, human rights violations, and environmental devastation. | It's why the Global Plastics Treaty must ensure a safer environment for us and the next generations — of everyone who calls our planet home. But corporate profiteers have more than enough resources to drown us out, so Greenpeace USA needs committed advocates to join them in the fight to make a difference in our planet's chances of survival. | Please, Kathleen, give $10 or more now to fuel the fight for our seas — and ourselves — against plastic pollution this World Oceans Day. | | Thanks for reading, and happy World Oceans Day! | Shailene Woodley Actor, advocate, and fellow Greenpeacer | | | | | | |
