Good things did happen in 2017

Together we can bring the good to 2018.

For Greenpeace, the country, and the world, 2017 had its ups and down. Right now, I want to take a moment to reflect on the good things that happened:

  • From the Arctic to the Atlantic, from the mouth of the Amazon River to Australia's southern waters, we've pushed back against new oil drilling. We're still waiting for a decision in our lawsuit against drilling in Norway's Arctic waters, but we're optimistic it will go our way. A victory here would keep millions of barrels of oil in the ground and set a precedent for future lawsuits around the world.
  • After two years of pressure from Greenpeace supporters and consumers, Thai Union — the world's largest canned tuna company and owner of Chicken of the Sea — agreed to major reforms that will have far-reaching benefits for ocean ecosystems, animals like turtles and sharks, and the human rights of seafood workers.
  • Our ship the Arctic Sunrise sailed down the East Coast welcoming thousands of community members on board, giving them the opportunity to learn about our mission and from each other on how we can protect our coasts, our communities, and our climate.
  • Afterward, Greenpeace and the Arctic Sunrise joined the Our Power Puerto Rico campaign, an initiative to bring sustainable supplies and support to the people of Puerto Rico who are still reeling from the twin disasters of Hurricane Maria and the neglect of the Trump administration.

Looking forward, I'm excited and optimistic about the projects we have underway, including putting pressure on Coca-Cola and other major plastic polluters to end its reliance on single-use plastics; working with communities across the US to fight against damaging oil and gas pipeline projects and promote clean energy; and continuing our fight for jobs and justice, our oceans, and our planet.

And finally, we are well on our way to meeting our fundraising goal of $3.25 million — aided by the generous matching grant of $167,000.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of donors like you who keep our campaigns and day-to-day operations going. You are the lifeblood of Greenpeace. Thank you so much for all you have done.

Sincerely,

Annie Leonard
Executive Director, Greenpeace USA

P.S. We haven't met that $3.25 million goal yet, and the dollar-for-dollar match is still in effect. If you haven't made your end-of-the-year gift, please do it now.

Greenpeace never takes a dime from corporations or governments. Everything we do is thanks to the generous support of people like you!
