| Dear Katy, A landmark bill to secure the rights of millions of LGBTQ people across the country was just introduced to Congress with over 230 co-sponsors. The Equality Act would affirm that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to LGBTQ people, banning discrimination in education, employment, housing, credit and federal jury service.1 The LBTQ community is one of the communities most targeted by Trump and his administration. Their relentless attacks are only possible because there is still no federal law protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination. The Equality Act is long overdue. It's time for every member of Congress to stand up for full, equal rights under the law for everyone. Tell Congress: It's long past time for LGBTQ people to have full civil rights. Support the Equality Act now. Click here to sign the petition. The Trump administration is waging war against the LGBTQ community. From inciting and enabling anti-LGBTQ violence to stripping away hard-fought LGBTQ rights under the guise of "religious liberty," Trump is trying to marginalize the LGBTQ community and make them invisible. By making incendiary, bigoted policy proposals like banning transgender people from military service, Trump is not only refusing to create a climate of safety and inclusion, he is also proactively attempting to dismantle LGBTQ rights.2 The majority of Americans support equal protection under the law for LGBTQ Americans, but in most states, people can be fired from their jobs, evicted from their apartments, or denied services because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and presentation.3 The Equality Act would update federal civil rights law to explicitly include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" as protected classes throughout the federal code.4 This landmark legislation would not only ensure that the LGBTQ community is federally recognized as a protected class, but it's also an important first step to dismantling prejudice and stigma on LGBTQ issues. Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently said that passing the Equality Act is a top priority for her, but many in Congress have not yet committed to voting for the bill. 5 We need every member of Congress to stand up for full, equal rights under the law for everyone. We need to send a strong message now that the vast majority of Americans support equal protection under the law for LGBTQ people and expect our elected officials to stand with us.
